Sorry for reviving this. I lost all motivation and put the car in storage...hence the long absence.

I'm considering getting a 2.7l, but the law states I must use the original ECU for the engine.
How time consuming would it be to swap over looms from a 2.7 donor car?

The two main engine connections to the DME, X3/1 and X59 are similar, but the DME 7.2 has two additional wire bundles coming from the chassis. There's a good description of the DME connections in the Bentley Manual starting at 24-13 (Fuel Injection section).

The additional connections for the DME 7.2 are mostly power and ground at [A] and throttle pedal at [D].

Besides the wiring for the DME consider: Exhaust and O2 sensors, Instrument cluster, Compatibility with ABS version and Immobilizer swap or programming.
