Just for fun thought exercise: Boxster KERs using Audi 4WD trans

Let me start by saying I’m not doing this, but it’s a fun thought. The Audi 01E transmission Is the same as the Boxster 5 speed but has a output shaft at the back for the rear wheels. If the trans held up you could use this output flange to run a KERs system (a motor that regenerates power under braking, stores it in large capacitors and then releases it quickly for a burst in power). The new Porsche GT3 RS has a similar system on its flywheel that produces an extra 165hp for 6 seconds (I believe). It would be far simpler with a trans output shaft.

Oddly the Audi guys insist this trans is bullet proof and these people running 1000+hp four wheel drive cars that seem to be able to prove it. Maybe the box transmission is weaker inside, maybe Porsche guys are running sticker tires. Has anyone ac to ally blown up a 986 5 speed transmission by putting to much power through it?

Anyways, fun thing to chew on.

I'm working on it. Give me a few more months.

But yeah, I might do that trany (hehe) when I finish mine off. I mean I'm already duel fuel LP/Gasoline. Might as well make some kind of quasi electric thing as well.

I had to have the 01E in my B5 S4 track car rebuilt for the same reason my Boxster S trans needed a rebuild. It's the same design with the same weaknesses. The 01E for the TDI is different - it's much stouter but then again - the gears rarely go - the synchros do and well they are the same design.

While we're daydreaming about weird systems to deliver power in a boxster. I would love to put a C4 front suspension in a boxster and have the front wheels powered by an electric motor. Tie it into the traction control so it kicks in when it detects rear wheel spin or have a manual button to activate it on demand

I've always wanted to put a Prius engine in an MR2 and rig up a simple torque vectoring steerage electric motor system for the front two wheels.

Oh so there is no already made kers system you're talking about building one from the rear output shaft.... yeah I'm out.

Somewhat related; What kind of process is it to stick an 01E to a Boxster engine? I know the bellhousing bolts up, what about the rest of it?

Then, stick a belt-fed superchager on that output shaft...

brb, looking up 01E prices...

Cool A speed dependent not rpm supercharger. :)

Boost by gear, without the pesky programming.
