my boxster is a porker

So ive stripped a lot of weight out of my boxster but at wgi this weekend, i put the car on the scales and it was 2750 without me in it. That was somewhat surprising and discouraging given an spb is 2450 ish minimum and thats with a cage. So im curious if i missed sonething really heavy somewhere.

Car is a 99, but it has a 3.2l motor, still with 5 speed
Coilovers and tarrett pro control arms
No airbags, no top motor or other parts
No carpet, console, stereo etc.

Really the only heavy junk are the window glass, motors and regulators, the air con/hvac, and well i have a passenger race seat.

Am i missing something?

Thanks

How much fuel was in the car? 6 lbs pre gallon, that can add up.

All the creature comfort stuff adds up. That includes sound system, insulation, and sound deadening material that's glued to the floor.

roughly half tank.

no lining or carpet in the interior or the trunks, so all that should be gone. All speakers, head unit, and amp are gone.

Also have straight exhaust with just resonators so thats another 40lbs gone.

I was really shocked at the weight of this thing. There isn't much too it, where is it hiding all this weight.

MaxD 07-20-2020 10:42 AM

Do you still have a full size battery? AC stuff adds up. Both fans in front? What wheels and Tires do you run?

My last run through the scales was 2663 with me and ~1/4 tank, SPB form

14lb battery.

I still have full AC, but that will come out shortly.

I do still have both fans.

I run lightweight carrera 10 spokes 7.5 by 9s staggered.

The glass, window regulators, and the aC I'm sure are going to be a good 100lbs.

I think that the bare 986 chassis is just heavy, due to all the bracing to make the car stiff. Convertibles are always heavier because of that.

It's funny, because all the suspension parts, wheels, and front engine mount are really nice, light aluminum pieces, so you'd think that the car would be so light. Nope!

right? Its a small damn car without a freaking roof. thing should be 2k lbs.

Time to suck it up and get to taking more junk out.

Would like to take out the SAI but my tune does not allow for it and I don't feel like paying for tune change

HVAC, heater core, radiator fan or two, AC condensers, window gear, should add up quite a bit. Once the window gear is out, gut the doors (keep the impact bar but remove the whole face that the door panel and window motor & rails used to mount to, which is no longer needed).

Depending on how you feel about losing them, the bumper bars (really the mountings for them) are surprisingly heavy.

My SPB has been an at-home DIY effort from my new-purchased Boxster, other than the roll cage, and without doing anything about excess wiring or heavy battery it's within 40 lbs class weight. It'd be better if I lost a bit more so I could run the cool suit box and still be close to weight.

My 3.4 6 speed street boxster has no insulation, stereo, speakers, airbags, trunk carpets and converted to mechanical top. I also have racing seats and center console delete. 2750#

My 2.7 5 speed rallycross boxster is completely stripped of all interior, top, bumpers, headlights, liners, one radiator, emissions equipment, windshield, most of the exhaust, hvac system and half of the dash. 2200#

Wow I am never going to able lighten this thing and keep it streetable

Carbon hood(s) as long as they are not crumple zone components could help for a street car. I had the idea of drilling out (lighting holes) the bars way back and I think some on here have gone and done it.

They make fiberglass almost everything and i think you could drop another 50lbs that way but its not cheap

Re: removing SAI - pulling the pump is easy and saves about 4lbs. I do NOT recommend pulling The other SAI gear and lines while the engine is in the car.

rastta 07-22-2020 05:14 AM

I'm at 2532. Gutted 3.6 six speed. With fiberglass top, hood, trunk and CF wing. Full size battery, air jacks and fire suppression system. 18 in wheels 245/275.

WizardSmokey 07-22-2020 10:22 PM

I got mine down to 2,460. It is completely gutted of almost anything and everything not related to driving. There's still a few things I could pull out, but would start to be a lot of work and effort for not much weight. I think I could get to 2,400 even. Any less than that will involve carbon fiber replacement parts and things of that nature.

curious to know what else you pulled out?

To be more specific i have NO:

1. stereo components of any kind
2. Airbag components of any kind
3. carpet, frunk/trunk lining, nothing over the engine covers etc
4. top motor transmissions, cables, etc
5. center console, lower dash, etc

I do have:

1. Lightweight battery
2. straight exhausts with bullet mufflers
3. coilovers
4. sparco seats and side mounts with planted brackets

Some heavier stuff

1. boxster s front brakes
2. 3.2 with larger oil cooler
3. csf rads
4. still have AC but thats going
5. SAI but thats going

thanks
5. full glass

Stroked & Blown 07-23-2020 08:28 AM

Does 'straight exhausts' mean that you removed all cats?

How heavy are the Sparco seats? OMP WRC-R and Recaro SPG are about 19lbs/seat for the FRP versions.

Have you drained out the washer fluid?

Have you taken off the underbody panels to clear out any rocks/dirt/gravel? I found a LOT up there when I changed out my tuning forks.

Remove spoiler motor and pin it in place?

Some people pull the charcoal evap canister, but Brad Roberts recommends keeping it, as it is in a good position for ballast.

Quadcammer 07-23-2020 08:45 AM

Yes, no cats. literally just headers, 2 feet of pipe, and 2 glass packs.

The sparcos are an Ergo and a Circuit 2 QRT, which should be on the lighter side.

I still have washer fluid and tank, but thats going

yeah underbody has been cleaned up.

Will do spoiler motor.

probably leave charcoal canister.

thanks for the tips
