Oh no, cracked wheel sucks!

Not sure if you saw, but Jeff Stuart / Mark DeShon put a 986S into two of the four trophy spots at the Fontana pro last weekend in STR. Jeff actually had a lead until the last pair of runs.

A little down on the PAX list (in the midwest / east coast STR tends to be near the top of PAX at national events) but hey, a 986S beating a bunch of NDs is encouragement no matter how you get it.

I did not see that! I saw the RX8 win CS in the ProSolo though. Encouragement all around!

Tire Rack still has the Sport Edition Cup 4 in 17x7.5/17x9. They're not exactly light, but they exist.

Here's the crack. I've been quoted between $125-$185 to fix it, or another wheel is $200 on eBay.

Turns out my wheel has been repaired before, so it's garbage now. I also found out that I have a set of 18x8/18x10 not 7.5/9 like I thought. I ordered a single replacement for now, but there has also already been a 986 at Nationals on that set using option code IXRB. I ordered a 2000 Porsche Tequipment Guide and Order Guide to show that they were available.

You could also go for the moon with IXRC (8"front/10"rears)

Since CS 986S has been discussed elsewhere, here's from someone who ran one in AS back in the day:

I don't have the details at my fingertips because it was a decade ago, but back in the day a bunch of us spent months trying to determine if the 8"/10" wheel combination was legal, and ultimately concluded that it definitely wasn't.

The owner's manual has no bearing on the legality of a part -- a part needs to have been demonstrably orderable, and we could not find proof for the wider wheels.

One thing that's changed since this was last seriously investigated is that Exclusive options are now explicitly legal. Likely your best bet if you want to claim your parts are legal is find proof that you could have ordered a car that way through the Porsche Exclusive program.

So just as an FYI, these cars were run nationally in the past, and people know very well that IXRB/IXRC wasn't legal back then when everyone wanted 8" fronts. Note that the rules are slightly different now, if the car could come from factory in the US with the 8/9 or 8/10 combo you're good to go. If they're only in the Tequipment catalog, they're an accessory, and they're no bueno.

What you'd need to successfully defend a protest is a build sheet / window sticker from your model year of Boxster S that explicitly lists that a similar car came from the factory with IXRB/IXRC wheels on it. NOT dealer installed accessory.

Now, as to the example of Boxster wheels... If I were going to try and run wider wheels on my Boxster, I for God DAMNED sure would be bringing lots and lots of documentation that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the car could have been ordered and delivered through the US dealer system that way. I'd also be ready to explain why all of a sudden I could produce that documentation when 10 or so years ago folks that were actively campaigning the cars at a national level were unable to do so, despite being very very motivated to find a legal way to run wider wheels. That's not to say its impossible... Its not. But I would want iron-clad documentation.

Yes, IXRC wheels is what I am after. I have the factory Tequipment catalogs and the Porsche NA order guides showing it as factory orderable instead of dealer accessory only. I went down the same rabbit hole as you and am trying to find a window sticker with IXRB or IXRC on it.

I painted the wheel, got the tire mounted, and put everything back together on the car. Now the crunch before the SCCA double-header this weekend!

Well, the double header was interesting. I did okay on Saturday, I think it was my worst result so far, but it was me and not the car. My co-driver beat me and did really well. Then we had test and tune and during that the bolts backed out of the passenger side CV axle enough to cause a noise. Luckily we were able to fix it and come back Sunday where I got 18th overall out of 100, winning CS and trophy in the Street 2 super class on PAX.

clean the bolts and be careful when re-inserting - they pick up grease when passing through the cv joint and won't hold torque.

I'll clean them and Loctite them again before the next event. I'd like to safety-wire them, but I can only find kits for the older air-cooled models.

Been a while since I autocrossed last, but I’ve been to nationals three times. Last time was in 2007, I think.

I see the DeShon/Stuart 986S will be running STR, that one should be interesting.
