Weight
What is the real world empty weight of a race prepared Spec Boxster? Including oil, water ,and cage, no gas.
How much of that is the cage? Thanks! |
Depends on the build. I'm a big guy, 240lb, and I have worked extremely hard to eliminate all excess weight from my car, and it now weighs 2400lb with no gas. Most cars come in around 2450-2500lbs.
Cage is build dependant too. A stiff cage with FIA bars and all the bells and whistles in DOM mild steel can weigh 150lbs. Most will be in the 100lb region. CrMo steel can reduce the weight if needed, but the cost increases.\ Edit - corrected weights |
Start with the SPB class minimum weight of 2650 with driver. A significant percentage of cars are below or very near the limit (I know guys who need some ballast either with weights per the rules, or running with extra fuel), while others can be up to 100 lbs overweight (it would be rare to exceed that). With an average dude's weight plus coolsuit gear not counted, the lighter half of the cars must be weighing in at 2450 or less (with fluids and barely any gas, without driver). It definitely can be done.
On cage weight I have no concrete numbers, but it can definitely vary a little by design and significantly by material choice (e.g. using thicker stock than is required). If I were to guess I'd say typically 100 lbs for the cage? Anyway, my car, gutted at home by me (not a pro shop build), usually gets within 20 lbs of weight, but I am only 160 lbs, and that's when not running the Coolshirt. So my car is probably somewhere around 2470. I wish it were 2430 or less so that I could be at the minimum with everything and even throw in a passenger seat at events where that would be convenient to leave in. |
Currently, my Spec Boxster is around 2,440 lbs in race ready trim with oil & coolant, but no gas and no driver.
My cage weighs around 85 lbs and is included in the 2440. Its not that hard to get down to this weight and be fully rules compliant. It IS amazing how every little bit adds up. If you read my Build page, I took 40lbs of "junk" out of the car pretty easily. I meet min race weight by managing how much fuel I have left in the tank at the end of a race. If I guess wrong, I could be underweight. |

Thanks to all for the empty weight info!

Last time I corner balanced I was at 2722 with driver ballast and a half tank.
Weight loss was limited to stripping the front/rear trunks and front/top engine cover carpets/trim. |
