Great test weekend at Road Atlanta, although it was stinking HOT! One good thing about the heat (95 with lots of humidity, 135 track temp), I found out that my cooling system works very well, water temps never got above 190.
This was my third test weekend in the car, first two at Barber. Because I was bouncing off the bump stops at Barber, I raised the car slightly before the weekend. During the first two trips I didn't understand all this talk about corner entry oversteer, that was until I went into T1 at full speed trying to trail brake deep as I always did in my 944 race cars. First step was to decrease compression in the rear, which helped a little but not enough, so I dropped the rear ride height and that helped quite a bit. I also had to chance my driving method through the corner to get back on the gas sooner to plant the rear. Will have to continue to work on this. I did take one wild ride on Saturday coming out of T1, I closed the gap on a GT3 far too quickly at trackout and had to either lift, go off track, or hit him. I lifted, putting me into a spin and off track, doing a fantastic 360 and ending up to the left of T2. Luckily nothing was hit, but I did tear up some of the underbody plastic pieces. Data shows I went started the spin at 89 mph. Most of my driving buds were parked sitting at T1 watching the entire episode, took a bunch of crap for that one. |
Been working hard to get the car ready for the NOLA PCA race in 9 days. I've been going through the checklists and the car is ready to pass race inspection. Did another corner balance today and then to a friends this weekend to align. The most work that I have to do is to replace brakes and drums on my trailer this weekend.

Been awhile since I updated.
NOLA race was fun. Car was not handling well at all in the first race, it was bouncing off the front bump stops making the car hard to handle. Finished 5/8 in SPB. After the race I cranked the compression to nearly full stiff. Then we lined up for the second race and it dumped huge amounts of rain on us as we were sitting on grid (everyone was on slicks). We ran 3-4 laps without the race officially starting and then were brought in as the track was under water. It was nearly impossible to go straight at 20mph without hydroplaning. Race was moved to Sunday morning. The points race went well, car handled much better and I managed a 3/8 finish. About 1 hour after the sprint we started our 90 minute enduro. First 15 minutes were fine, but then the car started oversteering badly and I spent the rest of the race fighting the car. Turns out that the front sway bar bolt had broken and therefore was running with no front bar. It was interesting to say the least. After I was back home going through the car I also found a broken left rear shock mount, that is now fixed. Engine and gearbox worked well and I'm happy with the results. Last weekend I was at Barber racing with PBOC. All issues with the suspension were fixed and I did not do any further mods to the car. There were no other SPB cars at the race and my only hope for fun was a friend in an SP3 car. Unfortunately, he had car trouble for the enduro, so I had no good wheel to wheel action. I did push the car hard for the 60 minutes and it ran well with no issues. I was looking forward to the sprint races on Sunday as my friend fixed his car. Qualified with a respectable 1:44.7, which is well under the current SPB record at Barber. First race went well, but my friend spun early, one GTS2 car was on my tail for a few laps before I pulled away. Second race was a blast as it was very close with the sp3 car for the first few laps. He got me on the start, and I got by after a few laps. Once passed I started pulling away by 4-5 seconds, then the dreaded double yellow came out. Once we got back racing, the sp3 car got me coming out of the hairpin and going into T7 (more power) and with two laps to go, I was unable to get him back (but it was close). Great fun. Best part was that when I pulled away, I set my personal best lap of 1:44.3.
So far the car has been great. I really need to get it on the dyno and see what kind of power it is putting down, will do that in the next couple of weeks. Pic for attention. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1511392488.jpg |

Wiring Removal
Great Thread - I'm where you where at about page 2 of thread. As a non-wiring guru (good at cutting, not so good at understanding diagrams or soldering) any recommendations on how to attack what's under the dash? I figure that there must be 20-30 pounds of wires, but it will be far easier to do before the cage goes in...

If I had to do it over again, I would leave the fuse box and relays in their original position, moving them to the passenger side was a pain.
Print out the wiring diagrams and make sure you know what wire you are cutting. I had multiple components off of my engine when I started the wiring and therefore could not start the car after cutting wires to make sure I didn't mess up. 20-30 lbs of wire seems optimistic - 10 to 15 possibly. There's a good post either on this board or on rennlist which shows you how to get the alarm module down to 8 wires. Take your time and don't be in a hurry. |
Headed to the Barber with Chin this weekend. Looks like lots of rain, but warm (mid 60's) all weekend. A good chance to get my wet setup dialed in.

Found an oil leak on top of the engine, cannot tell where it is coming from. Oil is pooled on both sides of the case, so my day ended early on Saturday. Ran the white car on Sunday.

Finally got around to editing a race video from NOLA last fall. Terrible start, but stayed out of the way as a couple of drivers spun half way through the first lap. Managed to go from 12 to 8 overall and 3rd in SPB (out of 8). Had to laugh when I saw in the latest PCA Club Racing News that I got the hard charger award for this sprint. Thanks again for guys for spinning and making it a bit easier for me.
