A few months ago I bought a used "like new" 996 cluster to install in my MY 2002 from eBay for $450. Sounded like a good deal, but reality and what the seller described didn't completely match up.
So I installed the cluster and soon it turned out that the voltmeter was DOA and the digital clock didn't work
So I posted on several forums looking for spares.
So one guy responded and offered me his "old style" (meaning MY 2001 and below) cluster. Actually he offered me two clusters: One which was complete and one which I could salvage for parts. He assured me that even though the plugs between the two clusters are different I could easily swap the broken parts.
Well, nothing could have been further from the truth.
The old and new clusters were made by two different suppliers and are completely different, and not one part from the old clusters fits on the new ones
So there I am now with 1 1/2 old clusters for which I have no use.
But this also means that I have no way of testing if they work.
Cluster 1:
part no 996 641 117 03 70C
Silver gauges with the labeling "Champion" in the middle of the tacho
left LCD module is missing
One backlight bulb is missing
One clip which holds the face gauge in place broke off when I opened the cluster, but this is no problem, the cluster closes fine and stays closed
The center and right LCD modules have been taken off, but from what I can see they will snap back in place (they are included)
Manual transmission
Cluster 2: (This will only be useful for donor parts)
part no 996 641 105 02 70C
All gauge faces missing
Needle for oil pressure is missing
Many bulbs are missing
left LCD module is missing
The center and right LCD modules have been taken off, but from what I can see they will snap back in place (they are included)
left glass of the front face (the one over the voltmeter is missing
Tiptronic
