Need help deciding on extended service agreement.

Hello there!

My name is Anthony, and I am the proud new owner of 2003 Seal Grey Metallic Boxster S.

I need help from you pros and veterans to decide whether or not an extended service agreement is worth while.

My 4 year 48K miles warranty is up in 1 week!

Porsche of Beverly Hills offers a 4 year extended for a little over 4K.

My other option is to find the best independent Porsche service garage in the area, and take my chances.

I do not have money to burn -- the Boxster was a big investment for me.

This is pretty new territory.

Can anyone give me sound advice, based on their experiences?

Just how reliable is the car in general?

Is a service agreement absolutely worth while? The smart way to go?

I know repairs on Porsche's can be very costly.

The service agreement would probably pay for itself with one or two big jobs, should something go terribly wrong. It would offer some peace of mind.

On the other hand, if the 2003 Boxster is know to be pretty bullet proof, I may be willing to take my chances and save the 4K.

Help me Oh Wise Ones.

I'm really on the fence here and need good advice.

I'm currently researching all about extended service agreements on Edmunds, etc., and plan to talk to both the dealer and an independent garage to let them try to convince me either way, and weigh the pros and cons.

But I'd live to hear from some of you -- the real owners!

THANK YOU in advance!

-Anthony G

If you want another company for a good extended warranty, check out warranty direct. They have very decent deals and will cover all of the usual stuff that breaks on our cars. Good prices too.

Do you have to pay $4k in cash for the warranty or is there a payment plan. If no plan, then invest $4k on your own and be well on your way to being "self warrantied"

I agree with Racer D. If they offer a payment plan that works for you then you should think about it. However, if its a one shot deal then its best you save your $4k now and maybe save another $100 a month and basically warranty the car yourself.

Few things to consider:

If you pay the $4k to the dealer and then sell the car or move before the 4 yrs expire, then what happens to the agreement?

Ask around (phone/online) and try to figure out where the market is pricing this warranty (insurance). Don't just depend on a single quote.

People with no "money to burn" are actually the best candidates for insurance/warranty as they'd be hurt the most (catastrophically) should an unfortunate event hit them. If you don't already have one, build a liquid $ stash for unpredictable emergencies of all sorts -- car and non-car related. Always a good thing.

Try AAAuto warranty. They have really good prices and their customer service if top notch. They offered me a three year 36,000k mi bumper/bumper with wear and tear and emissions covered on a 2002 with 49k miles for just under $2000.
