Should I get my car undercoated?

Just a personal opinion, but I would say no. The anti-corrosion coatings on body panels today are so much better than they were years ago that I think you have to live in a climate were you have salt on the roads 6 mos. of the year before undercoating is justified.

I'd say it's more a question of choosing the right material.
I agree that present-day body panels are far superior to those of years ago, but a good oiling won't hurt AND it does wonders for undercarriage component, suspension parts, brake lines, fuel lines, all nuts and bolts in general.

When I think of "undercoating" I think of the tar stuff they used to spray underneath, which weighed a ton, and hardened like cement. I suppose the WaxOyl-type coatings are less objectionable.

Agreed. Undercoating is the black permanent stuff and rust-proofing is the oil spray that needs to be done every two years.

If it's any kind of "goop" we're talking about, I'd definitely advise against it. I believe the dealers usually sell this for its sound-deadening properties. It won't be the best choice against corrosion because a breach in the surface will actually trap moisture- only to begin the process. I speak from expereince, unfortunately. :(
