Blown Engine
I have a 98 Boxster with only 17,000 miles and the engine blew up! I was cruising safely at a low speed and apparently one of the cylinder walls collapsed which resulted in a ruined engine. I understand that this was a known problem for the 97 and 98 Boxsters. Has anyone heard anything about this? Porsche is sending a new engine to the dealer for installation because they say that it can't be repaired. However, I'm being sent a rather large invoice and I'm not too pleased. If anyone knows of any service buletins issued by Porsche addressing this defect I sure would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks for the links. I think Porsche owes me an engine.

Are you the original owner of this '98? Then you might have a chance for getting them to pick up the cost of the engine, perhaps not the labor though. If you bought if used, you are highly unlikely to get a break at all on any of this. Well, this is just the picture I have about engine replacements from reading about them for the last 2 years or so. Good luck!

Unfortunately another thing is they will probably just crate the engine, ship it to Germany and you will never be able to see the innards on the engine.
Interesting picture of the sleeve, hadn't seen that before. |
