cold or warm oil change?

Guys,

I have my Box in winter storage. It will be sitting idle (with battery maintainer) for about 5 months. Before I get her back in operation in the spring, I plan on changing the oil.

Should I warm up the car with the old oil before doing the oil change? Or should I simply drain the old oil while the car is cold. Keep in mind that I change this oil every year (not every 2 years). I'm not sure if the oil need to be warm so that it flows out easier, or if even when cold, it will eventually all flow out.

I really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Hi,

You definitely want it warm. This will allow the oil to flow easier insuring that you get it all out. It also will take any accumulated dirt, sludge, etc. and get it in suspension, so the oil can carry it out. BTW, it's best to change the oil prior to storing the car for the season so you don't have all that accumulated moisture, fuel, and acidic compounds raising havoc with the internals while the car is stored. Ideally, you want to change the oil the day you store the car and allow it to run no more than 10 min. to circulate it fully and then shut it down for the season. Hope this helps...

Darn. Thanks Jim....I wish I would have changed that oil back in November. Oh well. I'll make sure I warm it up before changing it in April.

If its cold, and has been sitting for a long time, it will not all flow out.

Get it good and hot. Then change the oil.

yea, once u wake it up, get the car worm, take it trough some twisties for a spirited drive and change it out.
