Relocating AC Controls
Has anyone moved their AC control? I think the much praised cup holders are worthless. I've only tried to use them twice and neither cup was close to fitting.
I was thinking of moving them were the cup holders are . I would hate the look of two empty bins together at the bottom but the controls would sure be easier to see higher up. |
Haven't done it, but I'm in the same state of mind- the cupholders are useless.... and the climate control being down on the bottom in front of the shifter is in a VERY inconvenient place. I'd rather move it back up and put a storage bin down there.
I think Suncoast Parts has the bins for the bottom slots. They're like $30 each, IIRC. You'd probably also have to find the trim peice for the climate control to fit the slot in the upper slot. |
A friend of mine with an 98 Boxster moved hers from the upper location to the lower location to fit a nav system, and it was relatively easy, so I have to assume you could go from down to up the same way.....

Hi,
The AC control unit will only fit into the Bottom space. The middle one is too narrow. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
What I meant was to remove the cup holders and put the AC unit there, above the radio, not in the middle.
Yeah I agree, The ac readout is hard to see. Riding with a friend of mine, his Tacoma is set up the same way. After a few minutes the drink drips all down the radio, ac, middle console. |
Are the cup holders big enough to hold a water bottle?
|
To give you an idea of their size, they will fit a normal soda can quite well. They're just flimsey and shallow, so anything taller than a soda or small drink is precarious at best.
But I don't see why you can't do that. That's what they did with the 03. |
This is possible, because i am doing it. I am buying the the gt3 center console delete today/tomorrow it came down in price finally.
http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code =gt3console&Category_Code=POTEBXIN so obviously you can put the ac unit above the deck, and delete the dumb ass cup holders and cd holder. the cup holder is useless to me, i usually ask for a cup tray anyways. n the amount of times that i've spilt coffee all over the place, i want it out now, so that i never attempt to put anything in there again. cd holder i have already 30 gigs of music on my ipod which is direct connected to my deck and have no use for cd's in my car. |
You'd definitely have to move the climate control for the console delete. Does that come with the correct bezel for the CC unit?
I'd just want that, then put a cubby/bin down in the bottom.... |
Someone posted this on RennTech... figured some people might want to know it. I was interested in what parts I needed... any brackets and the correct bezel. This gives the part numbers!
Here is the write-up from PCA Tech... Question: I would like to move the a/c unit to the top and place it where the cup holders are. Is this a problem and where could I find instructions? Thanks, Steve Answer: Yes, you can move the AC unit back up to the top, where it is normally located on a vehicle without cupholders. First remove the side cover on the lower console by pulling the rear of the covers towards the outside of the car. Pull off the cover of the AC control unit and put to the side. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the AC unit in and pull towards you. Unplug the connectors on the rear, they only go into one of the spaces so you don't have to memorize the locations. Next pull off the switch covers on either side of the cupholder by using a screwdriver on the bottom of the holder and pulling to the rear. They should pop off. Now remove the cupholder cover by popping off the cover from the side and remove the cupholder assembly by removing the screws holding it in. Now you will have to fish down to get the harness for the AC head up to the top location. To install the AC head you will have to buy 2 brackets and a face plate. The frame is 9965576770001c and the 2 brackets to line up the AC head are 99657350100. Just install those parts and the AC head should just slide in the slot, install the screws and the face plate and now have your AC up top. Peter Smith - PCA WebSite - 6/3/2002 |
I had posted the same queastion there since I wasn't getting the response here. Did you see the pic posted of it done? He moved his stereo down. Instead of two empty bays at the bottom. Hadn't thought of that combo.
