Rattling muffler...

Whenever I start the engine cold, my muffler rattles. I wonder if this is a common problem, and if so, is there an easy fix? And yes, after a few seconds, it goes away, hence, it's no a big deal -- but sometimes it's kind of embarrassing to start it up (cold) when people are around.

i hope for your sake it is a exhaust rattle, My 97 had a "rattle" until i realized its a lifter inside the engine that has lost its tension and will rattle until oil comes into contact with it about 1 second after the engine has started. Sometimes its a very quiet tap tap tap tap tap and then sometimes its a loud TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP and it embarrasses me but im lucky to usually have no one around when I start my porsche which has just accured to me as very very very odd but true....

Exhaust rattle most probably is a loose heatshield from the kat(s). Bolts tend to rust leaving the shield to ratlle.

To replace the bolds I think the rearbumper must come off. I let my garage put a little new weld on it. 5 minutes work when the car is on a lift and rattle is gone forever.

The hydrolic lifter tapping is annoying too. You might try a thicker oil. Porsche recommends and factory fills with Mobil I 0W40. I've last put Mobil I 5W50 in it and it is a lot quieter / nicer.

I have what seems to be the muffler rattle. It does it warm or cold, but only when I'm in reverse to back into the garage?

Same with me. Rattles for about 3 - 5 seconds on cold start, then goes away. Warm starts are fine. Anybody else have any words of wisdom on this?
