I'm a newbie to this site and I'm praying that one of you can help me out. I have a 1998 2.5 Boxter with 60,000 miles on the clock.

Today to my horror the Check engine light came on, started blinking followed by copious ammounts of bluish smoke from the exhaust. Obviously I slowed the car straight away and nursed it home, the engine mgt light then changed to a costant on. A friend of mine pluged in a diagnostic computer and the fault codes related to a misfire in cylinders 1, 2 and 3.

Can anybody point me in the direction of possible problems?

Hmm, Misfires on one bank of the engine acompanyied by smoke.. Did the box smoek all the way home?

The only thing I can say would give you misfires on one entire half of your cyclindars would be catilitic converters or O2 sensors on that bank... I thought about ignition but they each have there own supply and would be too much of a considence to all fail at once.

Another senario would be that that cyclindars 123 have better compression than 456 and your air oil separater took a dive and the cyclindars with the best compression is sucking up all the oil that the Air Oil Separater cannot digest.

But Catalitic convertors sounds more like the culprit, they are probably clogging the flow of air and when cyclindars 123 try to force the exhaust gases out, you end up getting blow-by and oil forces its way past the piston rings in the moment that the blow-by is occuring.

Check your compression on 123 against 456 and see if there is a difference, remember to remove all sparkplugs and disable the fuel pump and hold the accelerator down 100% to get an accurate reading.

Thanks CJ, I heard a scary report from somebody that they are known for cracked engine blocks, please say it aint so!!

Also, thanks Bimussatti, I didn't drive with it blinking, as soon as I came off the accelerator, the blinking changed to a constant on.

Air Oil Sperator == blue smoke == DO NOT DRIVE IT!! :eek: :eek:

You are in fine company. All older 986's will do this and is common as the RMS.
The engine sucks in the oil and causes the smoke and misfire codes. If too much oil gets into the cylinders then you have big problems.

Do a search on RennTech.org and find out all about this problem.

so i found some traces of oil around my oil seperator, how long do they last after some oil accumulates around there?
also, where would be the best place to get one, i really wanna change it before i get stuck somewhere with similar problem
