Shifter knob and short throw shifters

I have a 98 boxster and would like to swap out the shifter that is currently in the car. I have removed it to see how it was connected..the shifter is stitched to the boot and I had to turn it inside out and remove a set screw on the side..the shaft the knob fits on is not rounded but is flat..I was surprised as I have always seen rounded shafts on other vehicles. After removing the shifter I thought replacing the entire shifter mechanism to a short throw would even be better...my question is how involved is this modification? and do you have to get under the car to complete it or can it be done from within the console area...lastly, will the new shaft take a universal shifter knob...suggestions to who makes a good short throw package would also help......thanks

Find the one on eBay from seller a2rinc,it's a clone of a $450 factory option shifter(B &M) for only $55. All you have to do is flip the shaft 180 and whamo your good to go!
