Winter Tires Question
 

Hey all! I've been considering getting a set of winter tires for my 986. There are two people and two cars in my household and although I work from home sometimes I need to run errands when my partner has taken the other car into the office.

I'm struggling to find any proper winter tires that fit on the rear wheels. The only tires I have been able to find that fit both the front and rear wheels and also has the triple peak mountain snowflake for winter driving is the Nitto Motivo 365 which is an all-season tire.

I know most people don't drive their boxsters in winter for whatever reason but I want to be able to enjoy my toys whenever I want to, so shopping for winter tires is on the agenda.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Unfortunately, no one will be able to help you without the technical data of the rims...

I’m running Pirelli Sottozero 3 on my 03. 255/40R17 rear. I’m pleased with these tires - they work well and aren’t particularly noisy. The car has limitations, cuz wide tires are wide tires, and when there is deep snow, I just don’t drive it.

I also wanted these but unfortunately not available. I switched to "Michelin Alpin 5" and 225/45 instead of 255/40 and I like the performance, great on water!

My car is a daily driver year round (with a hard top for winter). Swapping tires twice a year got to be a PIA so I bought an extra set of rims a few years back for this purpose, all are the narrower front wheels.

Currently I am on Blizzak 205/50/17s in the front and 245/45/17s in the back. But intend to go with all 205s for my next purchase.

Yes, I used to run the Alpins. Not really sure why I switched, but I suspect it had to do with either cost or availability.

I run a square set of 215/45R17 Vredestein Wintrac Pros on the stock 17" twists.

No issue with excessive stretch on the rear or squeeze in the front, both fit very reasonably and the car rides and handles great on snow and ice, as well as dry and wet

I went with 215's to shoot for the gap between the front and rear sizes, that way I get a bit of squish at the front and a bit of stretch at the rear, instead of a lot of stretch at the rear.

They also help the car hook up a little better on the rare occasion where I get a clear, dry day, and don't wear as fast as 205's due to spreading out the load across the width of the tire.

Rolling radius is almost spot-on compared to my Summer tires, with only around a 1% decrease.

I ran Pirellis in the summer and Michelins in the winter on my '62 Alfa Romeo Veloce Spider, but I got sick of swapping sets, so when I got my 986 I bought a set of all-season Continental ExtremeContact DWS--06 Plus tires, and I'm very impressed with the Contis' surefootedness in both summer and winter.
