Aligning Cables for Boxster Short Shifter

I have a 2001 Boxster Roadster and in the process of installing new shifter cable attachments. I decided to upgrade to a short shifter that I have installed. I marked the cables but they don't seem to match the new shifter I purchased. Do I need a installation tool and is there a specific tool for the short shifter? Not sure of the make as I bought is used. Can I adjust them without the tool and if so what is the magic to it?

Here's the description of the short shifter I purchased: 03 Porsche Boxster 986 #1284 Shifter, Manual 5 SPD Short Shift Kit OEM 996424010http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1734371014.jpg

Put the transmission in neutral ...Mount the shifter.... Hold shifter in the neutral position.
Adjust cables to fit the shifter attachment points... attach cables.

All an installation tool does is holds the shifter in the neutral position.
