Rear speaker install confusion
I have a 98 986, door speakers. Bought a rear kit and wiring from Becker. Can anyone tell me where it should plug in? I don't see a spot on my amp or cdr10. I've upgraded to double din but I am not sure if the speakers should come straight from the head unit or pass through amp first as the double din has a built in amp. Help?

There is nowhere to plug it in. I’d wire it direct to your head unit, assuming it has a free set of outputs.

I installed a 6-channel HAES amp from a 996 cabriolet. The 996 amp had outputs for the rear speakers. Here's a link to instructions for adding the HAES amp if you decide to use that option: https://www.renntech.org/topic/29250-rear-speaker-wiring-to-a-haes-6-channel-amp/
The advantage of using the HAES amp is that it fits in the space for the amp that was originally installed in our cars. However, I expect other amps or your head unit would provide better sound quality. My sound system (and audio installation skills) have evolved over the years. If I were starting from scratch today, I would probably install a good 6-channel aftermarket amp in the front trunk and use that to power the speakers. Adding rear speakers will help the audio in the car, but you may still feel like it is lacking something. I found that upgrading the dash and door speakers made a significant improvement to the sound in the car. I recently added some larger and better quality woofers to the doors. You can read about that here: https://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/79558-door-speaker-recommendations.html |
Fantastic thanks guys, will wire straight to HU

My rear speakers were wired to the original head unit. When I upgraded to a Sony double din I ran the rear wires to the frunk and installed a 6x40w cabrio amp. I didn’t notice much difference and it was a hassle. So I think you’ll be fine running them to the head unit.
