Oil level
Hi all :)
I know this topic has been thoroughly discussed here and in many other places, but I'd love to hear your opinion one more time for peace of mind (and engine). I've recently (less than 1000 miles ago) had an oil and filter change at the shop. The mechanic used Mobil 0W-40 (10 parts/quarts, I believe). The digital indicator is now at dead center when the car is on level ground and checked on a cold engine after several days of not running. ( see attached photo) The mechanic emphasized that Porsche specifically states that oil should be at the dead center when the car is used in street/urban environments/style. ( on the digital indicator) The mechanic states that oil should be closer to the top mark indicator if the car is used for more racing style. (also on the digital indicator) I mainly use the car for canyon driving and medium-spirited driving on highways/city (I don't go past 100 mph), but I'm planning on starting to do autoX sometime soon. I notice that when I check the digital oil indicator after a solid 45 minutes of canyon riding, it drops all the way down to the first notch, which I believe makes sense as the oil is still flowing around the engine bay and hasn't made it all the way back to the reservoir yet. I also have been checking the dipstick, which I personally find somehow hard/annoying to read (not as straightforward as the 914 one, unfortunately). But it seems to be somehow in the middle, even though it's an open-to-interpretation type of stick, if you know what I mean. What do you reckon my oil level should be? I hear that topping it off could be tricky and you can end up overfilling. If you reckon I should add some, could you be specific on the quantity? Milliliters would be best as, after 12 years of living in the new world, I still find the non-metric system hard to understand, plus I was already bad at math from an early age. Thank you all so much in advance. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/oil1717968694.jpg |
Two bars down from the full mark is optimum for all uses.

After reading this thread, I realized that after my last oil change two or three weeks ago, when starting the car from cold, the digital oil display shows ABOVE the top arrow, at the top of the display. At 84 years old, "spirited" driving is just an occasional run up close to red line, certainly no track or autocross games. I haven't checked the dip stick to verify. Car is 2000S.
Thanks for your input, Larry (the Bald Eagle) |
A couple of years back, Porsche put out a TSB recommending lowing the oil level about two bars (engine cold) on the display to improve AOS longevity. At the same time, they released a new dipstick that was recalibrated to the same level.
