Anyone have experience with Tonneau Cover?
Has anyone used the Porsche OEM Boxster Tonneau cover?
I'm tempeted, but would like to know install issues if any. Thanks in advance. |

The X69 Option - Tonneau Cover, is perhaps the least ordered of all the Factory options. One of the reasons for this is that the Cover secures with traditional Tenax Fasteners and to accomplish this, you must drill 7 holes, 4 in the sheetmetal and 3 in the Vinyl Dash. The Tonneau is made of the same fabric material as the Convertible Top. It is mostly for a Retro look because it's not really practical - takes about 4 min. to install completely, half that to button/unbutton the driver side. It is waterproof, but with a long vinyl zipper, I wouldn't wanna test the theory. In addition, you lose the use of the Center Windstop, though the mesh side Windstops can remain in place. its really ugly, and what the point of it anyway?

I have one, purchased off e-Bay, but have never installed it, mostly for the reasons pointed out by MNBox. After sober reflection, I did not like the idea of punching holes in the dash and bodywork.
As something of a sporty car tradionalist, tonneaus have always appealed to me. With the advent of the electric top, the primary reason for using one has been largely eliminated. When it only takes 12 seconds to raise or lower the top, versus 12 MINUTES for the average old Brit roadster, there isn't much point in using a tonneau. |
I had a tonneau on my Miata and liked it, but it seems unnecessary on the Boxster with the power top. It also looks a little strange on the Boxster with the roll hoops sticking up above it.
Add the expense of the thing (I thought it was over $1000) and the need to drill holes into perfectly good car parts and I can see why it is one of the least popular options. |
