that is exactly what i told my wife when i picked up the Panorama magazine @ the local dealer here last friday :) I love the looks and having that open air feeling without all the wind..hehehehehe :D

djomlas 12-03-2006 08:20 PM

i like the wheels and front bumper...that color is awesome

FIG 12-04-2006 12:11 AM

Arnt they the 997 Turbo rims?????

boxsterx 12-04-2006 01:10 AM

hotness!

i want one! :D

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 01:57 AM

I like it, as I like all 911s, but it does weigh a couple hundred pounds more, and is slightly slower than other 911s.

Kind of makes me feel like the um...roofiness doesn't justify the fatness & slowness :(

Well, it does, but in my mind it doesn't lol.

I saw one at the dealer where I bought my car and I got in and started playing around.

They are kind of pricey, though...

Perfectlap 12-04-2006 05:58 AM

That does not look like a near $100K car. Headlights still look out of place for such a well performing car, kind of fem. Hopefully this retro headlight thing will
be phased out soon and they'll give the 911 a front end design unique only to Porsche and not shared with VW's bugs.
And this car really is not a Targa anymore its just a XL sunroof.
It's got to pyhysically detach from the top to warrant a Targa label.
(Unless you can jump into the drivers seat to win the race when the bil ole' sunroof is open)

djomlas 12-04-2006 09:33 AM

i dont see where targa comes in, its just big sunroof.

i really dont mind the headlights tho, gives it a retro styling look, but i dunno if the whole retro thing is still workingout or not, but in general i like it if the $ wasnt a problem.

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 09:59 AM

I don't mind the styling because porsches are very aerodynamic, so I feel the design is good for that reason.

You're right, though, for a 12k premium over a regular carrera, the roof isn't THAT big, and I'm being honest. Seen these things in person. It's really nothing to cheer about.

I like the idea, but doesn't justify the price.

ohioboxster 12-04-2006 10:27 AM

I think its beautiful.

Perfectlap 12-04-2006 10:31 AM

I don't mind retro...as long as it doesn't look like a $15K car that only chicks buy.
Have you ever seen the brochure for a VW bug? It's 100% geared towards a woman buyer, I think there are even flowers on the dash!
The new 911 looks like a higher powereed VW bug sports coupe model.

I'm not sure I could confuse a 993 with a VW bug in the same way I think the 997 and the VW looks similar today. I think someone posted pics of some VW's bugs with Porsche wheels and they didn't even look that out of place. Something is wrong with that...

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 10:41 AM

Yeah...I try not to think about that.

My friend says the gt3 looks exactly like a bug.

Kind of makes me mad. But think of it like this: If bugs didn't exist, would you still think your porsche didn't look good?

Perfectlap 12-04-2006 10:52 AM

the 987 has a tear drop which is somewhat CarreraGT-esque.
THe 911 is just full on round, those lights are like Michael Richards aka Kramer, no matter how hard you try you will always see a lunatic/VW bug.

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 01:14 PM

I know I'm a really bad photographer and can't hold the camera straight but here's some pics I took of it when I picked up my car.

Looks the same as the OP's.

So yeah the top doesn't open that much really...I dunno, that's just for looks. How about how it feels? I think that's more important.

RandallNeighbour 12-04-2006 01:20 PM

That color on that car spells: S-P-E-E-D-I-N-G T-I-C-K-E-T

unklekraker 12-04-2006 01:26 PM

I still love it but too pricey for me :barf:

AUDIOGUY 12-04-2006 02:28 PM

I love it! Love the wheels and of course the targa. Definately better than the 911 cab!

Chills 12-04-2006 03:21 PM

I think it's a good looking car, but I must agree with Perfectlap, the top is just a big sunroof. Porsche needs to bring back the classic Targa.

Also, I must concur that it looks a lot like a Bug. I was watching onboard track footage of an Enzo. He was coming up on a car and I thought, "what is a bug doing out there." It was a 997...... which promptly got passed. :(

98Boxster98 12-04-2006 03:49 PM

Where does the big ole sunroof go when opened? Is it essentially two rear windows when it's retracted? The new Targa seems more practical for me. I don't the idea of getting out, taking the top off and then storing it. I wouldn't mind a Cayman Targa.

djomlas 12-04-2006 03:49 PM

i really dont think it looks anything like a bug

unklekraker 12-04-2006 03:54 PM

am i missing something here? I don't see the VW Bug reflection on it...can someone shed a light on me  Can someone post a pix of it side by side :o

Exactly. The big ole sunroof slides down under the rear window, so when you look in the rear-view mirror you are actually looking through two pieces of glass. Personally, I really like the new iteration of the Targa. I know I'm going to offend someone here, but I've always disliked the old Targa. The Targa's lines are nowhere near as clean as the coupe's.

I'm not saying they look exactly alike, but the two cars have very similar lines. The headlights and the rear end especially. If you think about it it's not that surprising. Ferdinand Porsche started Volkswagen for Hitler and gave him the Bug. Then he wanted to build sportscars so you can see the Bug's influence in his first cars. As the Porsche evolved it still retained the similar lines as the venerable VW car. I think that the 80's body styles looked most unique, but then the newer sleeker more rounded body styles are going back to the older days and look more like the Bug.

But that's just my humble opinion. Either way I think the car is gorgeous and I would like to own one... I just liked the "stop, take the top off, store it, and go" targa better.

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 05:24 PM

Well, like I said, this targa weighs too much more and costs too much more.

I think they should make the roof go ALL the way in. The one I saw and posted pics of, part of the roof was overlapping into the open-air spot.

Anyone got pics of the old targa?

Here's the old version of the Targa. You've probably seen 70 scrillion of them.

Bavarian Motorist 12-04-2006 06:34 PM

Ohh. Yeah that's a LOT better than the current targa. It almost reminds me of a t top witout the t..lol

But there are some convertibles designed like that that are considered "convertibles", like the lotus elise.

So that might have been redundant if porsche came out with that again, since the only real difference from the looks is that there is a large rear windshield.

Well, let's see how the targa does. I always want the best for porsche as a company. Means better cars for us!

super66 12-04-2006 08:04 PM

not a fan of it myself, I guess it looks alright but if its a targa I agree the thing should come off, its just a huge sunroof....

z12358 12-05-2006 05:19 AM

The BIG difference between this new "Targa" and the old one is the roof pillars -- not the ability to take the roof off. The new "Targa" has roof pillars, and the old one doesn't. For me it's simple:
No pillars = Targa.
With pillars = Sunroof. And that's what the new one is. A 911 with a big sunroof.

Also, I read a couple of mag reviews complaining that rear visibility is signifficantly dimished when both glass panes are stacked at the back.

Seeing this $100k rear-engined Porsche with a sunroof, makes me feel even better about my Box S: better looking, mid-engined, full top-down, for half the price. Can't beat that with a stick.

Z.
