Oil Change WO removing drain plug
 

Hello,

Is it possible to change the oil without removing drain plug?
I understand some Porsche models one can suck out the oil from above and refill.

Is this possible with Boxster 2000 vintage?

I have thought about it but the oil fill and dipstick tubes have quite tight bends which most oil extractors wouldn't be able to make.

You can try but most like it isn't possible.

You might be surprised how many of these cars we get flat bedded in because they tried to do this and found out that the "extractors" get stuck on the sharp bends and baffles in the oil sump, requiring us to remove the sump cover and get them out.

Simply a very bad idea.......................

Oils changes are easy on a 986. Why would you not want to do it the normal way?

Oh and by the way you have to get under the car anyway to change fhe oil filter, so vacuuming the oil doesn't really save you any trouble compared to draining.

I do the suction method oil change on my other cars, but with all the history of the Boxster engine I want to be able to get a better look at the oil. Can't do that thoroughly enough without looking at the magnet on the drain plug... if you don't have a magnetic drain plug, you ought to get one.

Even if I have to get under a car to get at the filter, I find the suction method less likely to result in cleaning up spills- I know, it's possible to do it the regular way without spilling, but it just doesn't seem to happen that way.

Drain plug and filter housing both remove perpendicular (straight down) to ground and thus minimizing any "mess". Contrast w my F150 3.5L TT EgoBoost which is a serious drain plug "squirter" and major filter dribbler (onto fixed undercarriage panel :rolleyes:) as both remove parallel to ground.

Regardless, for draining and even filling fluids in vehicles and other equipment these flex/shapable shields/funnels are great to have on hand.

Note that the cars that facilitate this also have their oil filter mounted on the top of the engine, meaning there is no need to get underneath for an oil change.

The fact the 986 filter is underneath is then a clue.
