Dash Speaker Rings

Hi,
I just found this:
http://www.directcircuit.com/products/Porsche-Audio-Speaker-Upgrade-Kit.html

Someone on RennTech used to make something similar that allowed you to replace the dash speakers without detroying the original speaker or doing any modification. This seems similar.
I am not sure what to make of it using zip-ties and having to cut it yourself, but it seems to be the only thing currently available to replace the dash speakers without modifying anything.
What do you all think?

I think if you're going to replace the dash speakers, just go ahead and mod the brackets at a cost of $0. It's not like you'll ever go back to the crappy stock speakers. Most people use the explanation of "If I sell it I want to go back to the stock speakers and not give the new buyer my $XX high end stuff". That's understandable, but seriously, you could just pull your high end stuff and drop a decent pair in for $50-75. It could only help in the sale.

You're call, but $50 is a fair clip for something you could either make yourself for under $5 or just mod the basket at a cost of $0.

The problem is that I have leather colored speaker grills from the 996 (an option on the 986) that are $150 each to replace. So if I mess up while modifying the grills, that's $300.

There is nothing to mess up on the face of the grilles unless you slip up w/ the torx driver while removing them from the dash. In which case, the baskets you're looking at won't help either.

All mods were done, in my case, to the basket that contains the original speaker (it's one big molded piece). Once you remove the whole assembly from the dash, you remove the 3 screws holding the basket/speaker to the back side of the grill (see green arrows below).

Then, just modify the "basket" by cutting out the original speaker from it but keeping the ring w/ the screw holes to hold your new speakers. Secure new speaker to ring (hot glue, velcro, epoxy, etc. Then just reattach it to the grill using the 3 screws.

Modify wiring in the dash by cutting off plug and replacing w/ appropriate sized female terminal connectors to match your new speaker. Reassemble all into dash and you're done.
