Oil Leak.... Not the AOS, doesn't seem like RMS or IMS.
 

I've got a 2003 2.7 Boxster with a odd oil leak. The leak is coming from the bottom of the sway bar on the right rear wheel. Swapped out the AOS hoping that would help, but no dice. Tried to track the leak up, but couldn't find much. Can the hose that runs from the oil fill in the trunk to the motor leak? (that hose is pretty oily) Seems far away from the IMS and the RMS (not centered on the transmission) to be that type of leak. If it is, I'll bite the bullet and pull the trans, but hope is eternal....

yes. yes it can.

It likes to rub on the edge of the body right as it enters the engine bay.
Rubs a hole on the top of the hose, just about impossible to see.
Leaks oil never the less.

Thanks, guys. I'll pull the engine cover again tomorrow and give it a check. I guess that thing is three pieces- I'll work through it and see if I can find a leaking spot.

On my S that hose was worn through and there was oil everywhere in the rear right side of the engine. It can be removed with the engine and transmission in place... see instructions for changing the coolant reservoir.

Take a peak, with a flashlight, at the transmission mount that side. I had a SMALL oil leak in that same proximity. Assumed the same thing (tube, etc.). When I actually poked my head under... peeking up... transmission mount. If that's it, you'll see hydraulic fluid pooling on the bottom of the mount.

Nothing to get alarmed about. Report back your findings. :cheers:

So.... Not the oil fill. None of the parts seem to be leaking. Pulled apart the trunk, and then checked the line coming from the trunk into the engine bay. No leaks. Took her for a drive to see if the leak would still manifest. Yep. Sat for a couple of days while I had to work. Took her for a drive again today, pulled straight into the garage to see if could see the leak when its fresh and chase it down. Annnnd.... now I have no leak.....

Yeeeeaaahhhh. So I see no note about the transmission mounts. I thought I had an oil leak. Fresh drips from one side for day. Then the drips stopped... likely because the mount had depleted itself of fluid. However... there was stil one drop on the bottom of the mount, and that was all the evidence I needed.

Starter986 that makes sense. There is a drop of oil on the bottom of the mount- I looked up the mount and determined it was dry vs wet- looks like I'm wrong! I was surprised at how much oil came out- and it was similar in viscosity to the zero weight viscosity the engine uses. Probably why it had me going down a rabbit hole.... I had four significant puddles under the car- only reason I ruled it out. I do have a picture of the mount with a drip of oil on the bottom- one of the two holes in the bottom of the stock mounts. Just too big to upload. Looks like I'm doing engine mounts!

hmm.. you meant transmission mounts?

I know that Gilles can bang out those mounts in around two hours, after the car is raised. Yes... it took us 8, but that was because we didn't remove the triangular mounts, and some nutss were stubborn. When I say "we", I mean Gilles, for he was a pro... and very patient. Aaaaannndd... I jest... for I don't know if he'd want to get involved in another transmission muont job. ;)

Do the mounts in pairs... and brand new.
