License Plate Fees

Just wondering what you guys pay to renew your license plates every year ?

Here in the Chicago burbs, it is $78 for cars and $38 for motorcycles ( annually ).

Considering I have 2 cars and a bike, I pay almost $200 a year just to renew my plates

( I'm am not complaining, I consider myself very lucky to own 3 vehicles )

Thought it would be interesting to see how much it varies from state to state...

Nick

BTW, $85 for personalized plates ( must include a number ), $91 for vanity plates ( no numbers required ) for cars, $45 for personalized plates and $51 for vanity plates for motorcycles ( In case you ever wondered why there are so many personalized plates here in Illinois ).

One time fee of $76 for personalized and $123 for vanity when you order.

Hi,

$91 for the Boxster this year, will drop to $35 next year (7+ yr. old vehicle) provided our wonderful State Congress doesn't mess with the regulations (which is being proposed).

Still, better than Mrs. MNBoxster's Jag 'S', her plates cost $104, and will for the next 4 years...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

You do not want to live in Indiana when you discuss license plate costs. For my 2005 Boxster it was $585--OUCH. Indiana's plates go by the price paid for the car--it goes back to the olden days when all the excise taxes, etc. went into the coffers of the political party in power. What is even worse is that our plates would be DOUBLE the cost if not for Riverboat Gambling paying 1/2 the fees and taxes. It sucks to own nice vehicles in Indiana.

In NC it is $20.00 a year, altho my vanity 986S plates are $60.00. Where they get you is property tax, which for the Box is over $400. Wife's 99 Grand Cherokee just over 100.

Same as you, Nick. 2 cars and a motorcycle. Last year it was 2 cars and 4 motorcycles and a trailer. I've gotten rid of some toys.

Well they call it Taxachusetts but it seems we're not so bad off after the above. $73/year vanity car plate, $41/2 years std. car plate, $20/year trailer. Excise tax on all 3 was $155 this year total.

I'm still stumped as to why the vanity plate both costs more (OK, charge me to have it made year 1, but after that... are the computer bits more expensive if I pick the letters myself?) and only has a 1 year term.

Never understood that either. The hit me double. $20/year for USMC retired plate and 20 more for personalized 986S.
