2000S 986 to 996 cluster swap

First off, I have reviewed the site search results and Wayne's 101 projects prior to posting, so off we go.

While I do understand I will have to replace oil pressure sender and run a wire, what gauged wire?

I do understand that year and model of 996 gauge matter, in my case I need a 2000 996 gauge from a 6 speed Cabriolet from a C2 car.

What I am unclear on is the need to reprogram my 986. I read that you may or may not need to reprogram?

If that part is true, can I ensure that the used cluster would be compatible without needing any programming.

Carrera Gauge Swap

Check out this thread for information I garnered when I swapped in a Carrera gauge cluster. To answer your question, if you simply swap in the 996 cluster, your mileage and VIN (which are stored in an EPROM on the cluster) would be incorrect that may have consequences. In addition, if your 996 cluster came from a coupe instead of a cabriolet, the light that illuminates when you raise or lower your top won't illuminate.

You could simply swap the board from your 986 cluster to the 996 cluster, but the voltmeter won't work and the analog speedometer would be inaccurate. It is also possible that the gas gauge will be inaccurate, but I'm not sure.

I created a pdf with the instructions for programming the type of cluster you have in your car. Send me a pm with your email address and I will forward a copy to you.

I forget the gauge of wire I used. I estimate it was about 12 AWG.

I have really enjoyed this upgrade. Good luck with your project.
