987 side glass in a 986

I would like to know if a side glass from a 987 will fit in a 986. Part numbers are different, but the shapes are very similar, exc around the mirror wing. Is a swap possible? thanks!

Well, if the part numbers are different and the shape is even slightly different, I would guess not.
986 and 987 are similar, but different cars

Welcome to the forum, and it might be a nice idea to introduce yourself in your first post

I believe they are a direct swap only regarding fitment into the door. Matching the roof is another story entirely. ;)

But really, no a 987 window won’t work on a 986. Perhaps with a roof swap?

Actually, roof swap is what we’re doing! Putting a Spyder roof on the car.

BTW, thanks for the membership. A new Boxster owner. 2003 that we have many plans for, appearance and performance mods!

I can't answer your question about the window, but I did learn that a regular 987 soft top will not fit a 986. When I was seeking to replace my plastic rear-window top with the top and frame from a 2003 or 2004 986, I found a top at a recycler. It was supposed to be from a 2004 986. A friend of mine and I spent about an hour trying to make it fit and couldn't do it.

I contacted the recycler and asked them to send me a picture of the car the top came from. They sent me a picture of a 987. I eventually found a top from a 2004 986 and it was an easy install.

The Spyder roof may be different. I recommend that you carefully check how the front of the roof aligns with the windshield.

We are using the header bow from the 986, and fitting the Spyder top to that. The roofline at the windows has us hung up. If we can install 987 Spyder windows in the 986 doors we’ll have it.

?

If so, this would be my solution! Have you been down this road?

I would think you're gonna just have to try to fit one and see if it works. It's a quick job to remove the door card and remove the glass from the regulator. Don't forget about the airbag.

Will you please write up a diy thread on what you're doing? A "Spyder" style top is something that been tried several times over the years and (I think Pedro?) even a kit was in the works at one point, but this sounds like a completely different approach than what's been done in the past. Good luck!

Actually, our hope is to do an article on the project. We’re a long ways out yet, but answering questions one by one.
