Ruf 3800s/381

Here an Excellence article on the RUF 3800s/381. There's some very complimentary comments on the Boxster's chassis compared to the Carrera.

I just drooled on myself...I know what I want for Christmas.

For the same price as the Carrera Cab with the same engine, it's actually a viable alternative.

Damn, I guess it requires the 987 engine computer to install the 3.8L engine. So no dreaming for my little MY2000. No replacement for displacement I guess, turbo and supercharger upgrades aren't gonna give that steady torque band. Mmmmm, cubic centimetres....

I read this article in the magazine few weeks ago. Things like this show how naked the emperor really is. Porsche can build this car and sell it for $70k base, but that would mean bye-bye 911. I wonder if the $46k conversion price tag has already subtracted the value of the new 3.2/3.4L engine that is being replaced. The rarity and optimality would make this car depreciate slower than a standard Carrera S.

Dave,
Not true. I'm in the final stages of putting a 3.8L 997 Carrera S Crate motor in my 2002 986S. It is being done by FVD in Florida. Yes, the electronics were tricky with the Canbus vs. the new bus, and the replacement of the Motronics to a more modern version, but they have gotten it done and it will be back in my hands in a couple of weeks. Everything including the variocam plus will be working fine.

Absolutey phenominal (referring to the FVD job on the 2002). And for $25k, not really bad at all. I wonder whether that takes the "core" engine into account....

TriGem2k 11-22-2006 10:47 AM

At 25k that sure beats the hell out of the RUF 46K. Ruf may include wheels and such but for almost another 25k id do that stuff myself.

Right now I am actually looking strongly into a Twin Turbo kit for my 2001 2.7L . Check it out, http://www.turbowerx.com/page1/page3/page3.html. It's nothing like a 3.8L but its only $6995.00 + $800.00 install.

Didn't Farnbacher Loles put the 3.8/X51 into the Cayman (GTR) and they were able to get 400hp? If I had the cash, I would definitely rather buy a new 987 and get FL to drop in the X51 and give me 400hp.

Dave, from the thread in the link, FVD was doing test drives on July 20. You wrote you expected delivery in August. It's Nov 22 now. How long have you been without your car total?

The conversion sounds very exciting.
$15-20k (old Box) + $25k (3.8L conversion) = $40-45k (perfect track car)

From the what I've been reading the past few years FVD is the place to go, RUF is just plain overpriced and your paying for the name.

Personally, If I could build a dream car Itd be this...
1. all carbon fiber 987 body (black) with 03+ 996 headlights, GT3 front bumper, sideskirts, etc...
2. New 997TT engine tuned to 600HP or the GT V10 engine
3. Cayenne turbo brakes inside 19's with a sport suspension
4. Rollbar with removable top section for top down driving
5. GT3 seats with harnesses
6. first 7 speed gear box in a porsche for shorter gear ratios, lol (maybe not)
7. And lastly, its gotta have tinted windows.
