02 Boxster S grinds going into 2nd gear

Looking to buy an 02 S where the owner says it grinds going into 2nd gear.

Is this a well known issue? Easy repair? Inexpensive repair?

Thanks. 115k miles and in good condition.

Define expensive & then define inexpensive.

Are we talking about a manual or tip?

I think you'd need to drive it. If it's a manual with a minor "crunch" which is worse when it's cold, she probably just needs a fluid change.

If it sounds like a kid learning stuck for the first time though, or if it's a tip that is chewing through clutch disks, you're probably looking at a new tranny if not at least a complete teardown. That price will be dependent on whether you can find someone to do it who knows what they're doing, but I'd imagine it's gonna be several K (unless you find a good used one on here for less). I think husker just paid 8k for a new 6 speed, just to give you an idea.

Second gear synchros are known for premature wear on the 6 Speeds. Mine improved greatly with a fluid change but still occasionally grinds when cold especially on down shifts but I can live with it. If you do change it make sure you use the real stuff from Porsche. Expensive but worth it.

Expensive?

My 987 S 6spd in my CSS would crunch when downshifting from 3-2. Renowned expert in AZ said he could fix it for $1300 in parts and $600 labor. Plus shipping from Neb to Az. No brainer.

Then he found a partial tooth loss on the pinion gear - $2600
Next he said the 3rd & 4th gear synchos were past their prime - $2000

Now at $7000, I was only $1K from a reman. Ended up going the reman route. My car has 68K mi and 2-3 DEs / yr the last 8 yrs. Can't imagine a trans w/ 115K mi will be in top shape. YMMV
