Need help with transmission cable install

Background;

Pulling into a parking place, I lost "connection" to tranny. The shifter seem to move around but tranny would not engage.

I had her towed home. Inspecting under the car, I found that the shifter cable was loose from the anchor point.

I procured the clips and the green shifter alignment tool.

The console is out and the shifter is held in place by the green tool.

The tranny ends are disconnected. I am not clear on how to ensure that the tranny is in nuetral.

Help please.

BTW, I am having doubts about my process. Maybe the root cause is hydraulics.

Help please with my process or diagnosis.

Okaaaaayyyyyyyy....

So... is this an AT or MT? Year of the car?

I'll assume it's a Porsche.
