Converting MPH to KMPH
Hiya,
Just took my car to the local (and only) Porsche dealer/service department in slovenia. I asked them the plug their computer into my Boxster so that they could comvert the digital display from MPH (its an american car) to Kmph and the F to C on the temp readouts. I also asked them to swith on my on board computer so that the outside temp would be displayed? The response I got from them is that this is impossible as american cars are only programed in imperial system not metric!!!! I asked them if they were sure and they said yes. They even tried for me but they could not do it..... Whats you opinion as everything thing I read out there says that this is B***S***. Thanks. |
It is probably controlled by the model code, for a US acr it is 986310 for a base and 986320 for an S, I think in the UK for example it is 986311 and 986321 if I remember correctly. There are other coding elements in the computer where you can change the setup but when I experimented with making my car German some things started misbehaving, the doors would lock and unlock by themselves and the horn would sound.
So, in theory I'd think it possible but you'd have to experiment quite a bit as there are different settings sprinkled throughout the DME. He the HVAC I think there is a button combination that will change the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius, not sure about the OBC display without playing around a lot. Chris. |
on either side of the tachometer (RPM guauge), there are two knobs. the one on the left resets the trip meter. the one on the right sets the clock. it also changes the speedometer readout from mph to kph and back. to do this: with the ignition on, twist the knob to the left and hold it for five seconds.

I can send you screen shots showing how to turn on the OBC with a PST2 if you need them, you can print them out and take them to the dealer.

Thanks mate. the screen shots would be great.
As for the knob.....didnt work cheers.. |
See the attachment, note that the order type value may be different for your car, if it is already set then I'd leave it as is.

Using the proper knob will work for switching the digital display to Metric, KPH, °C, etc. To do this, you turn the Right-side Setting Button (the one with the clockface on it) anti-clockwise and hold it for 5 sec., then release. This will change the settings on ALL versions, USA or ROW. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
Thanks for the PDF
hope they can read English! Cheers |
Unfortunanty the trick with the swith does not work!!!
must have gremlins in the box |

It does work, I did it yesterday. The knob that sites above and between the Fuel level/Water Temp & RPM gauge..... This knob has a little clock painted on it, hold it Twisted to the left for about 5 seconds and you'll see your MPH switch off and you'll see KPH appear on the digital gauge. |
Im tellin ya. Its not working. maybe that knob is fubar?
tried it a dozen times so it looks like im outta luck with this one |
Well find the location in your owners manual that shows you the steps and make sure you are understanding us correctly., Then if it still doesnt work, goto the dealer and tell the service guy to walk outside with you and set it for you... doesnt require any tools or anything.
Keep in mind that yesterday we told you the wrong knob to turn, today its the knob with the clock painted on it, which is the correct knob. |

Very possibly a bad switch. People tend to really reef on these things often causing them to fail... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
