I think whatever rubber/plastic that gasket is made from may experience some kind of permanent shrinkage as it ages that can't be fixed by soaking in hot water.  I had a similar experience a few years ago.  One of the studs on the back of the emblem broke off as I was removing it to fix the gasket.
