Can't open rear trunk

had a liquid spill in my rear trunk and pulled out the carpet to clean it up. I noticed the 2 release cables(primary and emergency cables) were loose on the latch actuator. I didn't see any retainer and could not find anything I could use to hold them in place so planned to go to the hardware to find a retainer that would fit. Now the cables have apparently come off the actuator and I can't get the trunk lid open. I've tried the emergency cable and that didn't work. Has anyone found a way to break into the rear trunk?
