You will regret not going glass.

RandallNeighbour 11-04-2006 07:43 PM

If you don't buy a glass top, no one here will be your friend any more :(

Im so Emo that i wont conform to you glass top people. Mood...apethetic ~~~GET OUTTA MY ROOM MOM!~~~ :)

Now that you've gotten all that whining out of your system, it's time to order the glass top! If we plastic top owners cannot live vicariously through you, a glass top replacement forum member, what will we have to live for anyway?

What are your reservations beyond the 350 dollar difference in price? Install rates are the same.

Edit: I came back to this post fifteen minutes later after I thought about it a little. If I were replacing my top today with a glass top, I would definitely go with the GAHH top which is a lot more money, and have one of their official installers do the work so it would be fully insured against bunching, the surround coming away from the glass, etc. They've been very responsive to replacing tops for free (they reimburse the installer) and if I bought even the same top from eBay and had my mechanic install it, there would be no warranty on the top or the way it acted a couple of months down the road.

So, I still think you should go with a glass top, but not a cheap one! :D

just buy a completely glass roof. THE WHOLE THING

that way theres enough glass to go around for everyone

boggtown 11-06-2006 07:53 AM

Take it west coast customs and get a custom gold metalic top. Oh ya... Or better yet, get a plastic top so the entire thing would be clear, and itd be like having the top down all the time.

03b0x 11-06-2006 07:57 AM

OR! OR!

Get the glass top. just like having the top down but twice as expensive. then you can go to places dressed like a mime and do the whole "stuck in an invisible box(get it box-ster?)!"

you'll be a hit at all the parties.

yes i have nothing to do at work...

The aftermarket glass tops seem to be made of thicker/better quality canvas. Well at least that's how it looks to me in photos. Or is it the same Hartz OEM Canvas?
This would be my #1 reasn for not replacing it with and OEM plastic windo top. I like the larger viewing area of plastic even though its not as visualy sharp glass. My plastic window is six years old and still cyrstal clear.
But the glass does give the car a more "expensive" look that is worth the extra $300. Also installation is not cheap better to get the best you can afford.

Dear Dairy... Mood - Fustrated

These 986 guys want me to buy a glass top for my boxster but would it be wrong to conform to them? or does it make a difference since im selling it in 3 years? Dairy...Your the only person i can talk to. Excuse me diary while i go to my moms bathroom to use her eye liner and slit my wrists with a sheet of paper and post the pictures on myspace.com

:D

ok Seriously, I dont want to spend over 400 for a top, Im going to get that blue top from the ebay seller. Im also going to install it myself. 2 reasons why i want the plastic window. Price, and the second is im really anal about my blind spots and i want as much window behind me as possible, I dont want to be the guy that changes lanes and hits a car.

03b0x 11-06-2006 10:35 AM

i understand what your saying. i was just giving you **************** :P

imho i think if the car came with it then well, you bought it. so live with it. its not like your driving every day and whenever you turn around you just scream **************** I HATE THIS WINDOW! otherwise..theres a problem. i really don't think the plastic window is that bad.

RandallNeighbour 11-06-2006 10:36 AM

CJ, you make good points. Buy the plastic window top.

However, I've watched my mechanic (for a little while anyway) change a top from a buddy's boxster. He bought his top on eBay too. There are at least three aluminum support parts you will have to tear off your old top and glue to your new top (in an exact position to keep the new top from wrinkling or folding poorly before you can install it. The eBay sellers don't ever tell you this, and their tops do not come with the aluminum parts attached like the very expensive ones come from Porsche.

My mechanic said he's replaced two tops (at the dealership for big money) from guys that have never done it before and screwed their replacement top up so badly they had to buy a second one and let someone else with experience do it. He also said that it typically requires a second set of hands during a couple of phases of the installation.

Best of luck on doing it yourself, and please help the rest of us by posting pics of the removal of the old top, gluing the aluminum pieces on the new top correctly, and installing the new top. Everyone here would love to see what is entailed.

Somebody installed a blue top with glass window on this forum and I remember it looking pretty good.

CJ_Boxster 11-06-2006 11:17 AM

Nah, i wouldnt install that on my car, I hate to accessorize my dash with stuff hanging from the window or rear veiw mirror, i wouldnt want this weird looking mirror with 2 elbow resting on my dash.

Perfectlap 11-06-2006 11:56 AM

if only I could count the number of times that little $20 ivention has saved my neck driving at night time! The German Po-lice use it on zee autobahn. It sticks to the glass. I crazy glued the middle joint so it stay fixed since I'm the only that drives my car.
There's also the convex mirror that sticks over you existing door mirror but I think it more expensive. I might look into that one for the passenger side blind spot Either one is a must have to overcome the blind spot.

Here you go:

Right-Click the hyperlink below and choose "save target as" and download it to your computer.

They have a nice section on removal and replacement starting at page 61.

Boxster Workshop Manual <--------HyperLink ;)

Complete manual can be found here:
http://www.porscheteam.nl/werkplaats/index.html

And credit for finding this site goes to Boggtown

I'll say a little prayer for you. After seeing my mechanic do it, that's a job I would not touch unless my mechanic was letting me help him do it. There's too much precision gluing and positioning to do for one who has never done it before.

Please post pix of your process and journal about it here, ok?

I'd love to see a non Porsche trained tech do this and prove to me that a smart guy with a spare weekend can tackle it.

BTW, a committed friend who will work with you throughout the weekend and be a second pair of hands and eyes and brain for you would be very helpful.

PS. You may need a rivet gun and rivets.

bagwell 11-14-2006 06:58 AM

how long did it take to rcv the top from that seller?
