Exhaust muffler fitment between years/models.

I searched the forum. Yeah, it was maybe more of a skim search than a deep one.

Anyway, most common question was: is 2.7 muffler exchangeable with 3.2.
And I found yes, it is.

My question is - is there any difference between the years?
I found different part numbers for 2000-2002 and 2003-2004.
Looking on the picture they seem to be same... but this is only some graphics.

So, what is it?
Will 2001 base work on 2003 base just fine? And why there is a difference? Was the exhaust design related to different engine mapping? The 2003 got a tiny power bump.

What basically is happening - I have 2003 base with Pedro modified muffler. I want to go back to stock.

I just tried inserting wine corks into the pipes (as a temporary plug) and the noise is much nicer. Well, to me at least.
I would give it away to someone who will give me the stock back. But then - would that work fine between the years... and models.

Thanks in advance.

The early pre facelift cars have a welded on tip an the facelift cars have a bolt on tip. The facelift cars have a different rear bumper and the exhaust tip sticks out a bit more.

Thanks!
To summarise.
Basically, mechanically the mufflers are the same. Just the tips mounting style and bumper shape are different.

Bringing back an old thread. Are there an internal differences or differences in sound between a 2000-2002 S muffler and 2003-2004 S muffler? Or is it only the tips?

I've got a rattle in my Dansk muffler and if I can't fix it, I will be shopping for a used one. thx!

Danimal, I'm 99% certain that they are the same internally.

Also, I have a variety of stock mufflers and may be willing to trade one of mine for yours if it is similar to the Dansk 'Sausage' that was on my '97:

On mine some of the mounting brackets were cracked causing the rattle. If that's the case with yours, any good muffler shop or welder should be able to repair it.

If you are interested in a trade, I'm willing to ship mine at my cost, then you ship yours at your cost (repaired or not) after you have swapped them out.

Thanks! I’m hoping it’s just the mounting bracket. Mine is not the sausage style. It looks like an OEM. But I can’t tell which version it is “sound” or whatever.

There are no 2003-4 S mufflers ... Base and S are the same, just different tips fitted.

One thing that is different is that facelift mufflers sound better than prefacelift mufflers and are a nice retrofit to 2000-2002 cars ... so yes, there must be internal differences

Caution: find your facelift muffler with tips included. New tips are ~$400.
