Engine ID questions

I just bought a 2000 986S, its my first Porsche and am going through it. It has a salvage title because it was hit in the rear but so far everything looks fine except for the rear bumper. Anyway the engine ID is M96/2167Y02181 and I am wondering if this is the correct engine for the car. Also why does every other part on the engine start with 996 instead of 986 like it does on the suspension and other parts. Thanks for your help on this.

because they share parts. In fact there are even ford parts in a 987 seat. That is how automotive mfg works. they dont design parts specific to each and every model, the share parts across their entire line. wheels, steering wheels, switches, etc
