"Blowing out the carbs"
Not to date myself too much or anything, but back in the day we used to do this thing where we would rev the RPMs up as safely as possible to blow out / clean the carburetors.
I love my '99 Boxster. I love to look at it and I love to drive it. But I have no idea what's under the hood. Should I be blowing out the carbs occasionally on this this car? |
Well, what there isn't under the hood is any carbs... they use this new fangled fuel injection thingy... that I am convinced is only a fad. No one will remember it in a couple years...
|
No carbs to worry about but the engine doesn't like to be babied so some spirited driving does the motor good. Guys who race rarely have ims failure. Thrown rod, dropped valves, spun bearing, now that another story
|
Nope, it was an "Italian Tuneup" in the '60s as I once explained to a policeman. And he smiled and just said "take it easy". In truth I was 40 over but he was going the other direction and I had slowed to legal before he turned around and caught up to me.
Warm everything up and then let the revs climb even if you have to keep it in a lower gear to stay legal. |
I believe that every vehicle that I own should (except for the race hauler Dodge van) hit redline at least a couple times during every drive. Fortunately, I am about seven minutes from a nice twisty stretch of mountain road. Sometimes coming back from work, I extend the commute a bit ...
I have no idea if there is scientific validation for my theory. But dammit it feels right. |
We used to call it "blowing out the carbon" Usually seen when a little old lady from Pasadena tries to merge onto freeway in front of a semi.

+1 and eight more characters to keep the over-lords at bay.
