odometer reset

I have a 2003 Boxster S. 986. I can confirm without reservation that the Xtool X100 Pro2 scanner changes the odometer to whatever I want it to say with incredible simplicity. Hook up to OBDII select dashboard, select Porsche 986 select change mileage save present setting, put in desired mileage and go.

Assume you did this for the 996 gauges you installed? The listing in Amazon says it doesn't do mileage but it does keys, remotes and immobilizers for 2000-2014 cars. I wonder if it does Porsche key programming.

hehe a master porsche key... and you can change the mileage at will. I like this ultimate thief's tool. It should come with an angle grinder so you can remove the VIN plates. LOL

You do realize that changing the odometer mileage for other than a replacement dash is very illegal

That is exactly what I did. I changed my 2003 986 cluster to a 2002 996 cluster and adjusted the miles on the 996 cluster to match the actual miles on my boxster.

Of course, a CarFax report may not agree with the odometer.

odometer reset

This is actually pretty intriguing. I want to put a 996 cluster in my 986. I planned to have to pay big bucks to send my 996 cluster off for a odometer adjustment and possibly wait weeks for it. In that time, I couldn’t drive my Boxster, obviously, or my miles wouldn’t match my new cluster. Now I could just do it in my garage.

How does this tool compare to the Durametric tool that everyone seems to recommend?

Keep in mind that you'll also want to change the VIN in the new cluster. I did it with an eprom programmer. It's a little scary that you can change the odometer reading from a hand held scanner.

I want to change the VIN but the scanner will not do it. I read somewhere if I set the odometer to roll over to 0 that it will boot like a brand new cluster and look for the VIN in the ECM and copy it. I do not know if this is true, maybe someone will chime in. I am not computer literate enough to remove the Eprom and reprogram it.

You don’t have to remove it and if you can click “copy and paste” on a mouse, you can do the eeprom.

Doing it that way ensures that everything is copied over and you aren’t supporting the makers of a thieves tool.

I also did the 996 cluster swap in my 02 track car with a eeprom programmer. Did both mileage and VIN.

I know I’m resurrecting an old thread but I have a 996 gauge cluster in my 986 and I want to sync up the mileages. The Aurelio Mk808 does not do Porsche mileage changes.

I bought an eeprom reader but I am having a hard time making it work. I connect the clip to the chip on the board but nothing happens on my computer. I bought a cheapo chip programmer on Amazon and I wonder if I don’t have what I actually need or if I am just doing it wrong.

What chip programmer hardware is good? Do I need a program for the computer to read and write values? From what I was reading in the Amazon page it seems like the seller is saying once it detects a chip the app should just pop up but I didn’t install anything special.

This is what I tried following and didn’t have any luck. https://rennlist.com/forums/attachments/boxster-and-boxster-s-986-forum/1304533d1559093466-cluster-upgrade-working-with-the-eprom-on-porsche-boxster-illustrated-old-and-new-style-clusters-minimum.pdf

Both Boxsters I need to do are late-style cars, a 2001 and a 2004.

I super appreciate the help, thanks!
