2004 - 986 Intake Question

I have a 2004 SE Boxster

From what I have read that the air box on this car is the same as the 987.
Is this correct?

I have also read that the manifold is the same as the 987.
Is this correct?

What plenum does this car have?
What size TB does it have.

Thanks for the help

This car has a number of upgrades, one of which you mention: the 987 air box. The manifold and TB are the same as the 986 S model but it does have an anniversary-edition tune which gives it a bit of extra oomph. Oh, and those lovely wheels!

Is there much difference (if any) between the 987 intake, plenum and TB vs 986?

Im turning the 3.2 into a 3.8 and would like to get it breathing better.
So I was thinking/assuming the 987 manifold with the IPD plenum and GT3 TB.

Thoughts?

I don't know about 987 intakes, but I can comment on the TB. I just finished shoving an 82mm TB into my engine bay. If you're into DIY, you can save $950 by going with then 996 cable throttle plenum. It takes a bit of modification but you can make it work and it only cost me $30 on pelican. If you're gonna make it worth it the rest of your intake needs to be at least 82mm and that's not an easy task. Woody did a similar mod and both of us ran the intake through the back firewall and into our trunk. I posted pics in the DIY section.

The larger intake TB and plenum are only part of the equation. To complete the increased airflow, you'll need to address the restrictive exhaust system on the 986 (headers, larger pipes cats, etc. Then you`ll need a tune to tie all this together. I covered a lot of this on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/tXx8GoTwATY

Like previously said, the exhaust needs to be addressed. In my opinion the exhaust is more important than the intake. The 986 exhaust system is horrible for performance and it weighs a ton. Unfortunately there are no real good cheap options for performance exhaust systems unless you fabricate your own or are okay with annoying resonating mufflers. As for the intake, I like the 996 but you'll need to lower the motor and inch or so, or run the TB/intake tube above the engine cover. I have a friend who used a m97 cayman intake/TB on his 3.4 and didn't need to modify at all for fitment.

Looking for more Botton to Mid performance as I do not track the car.
I am aware that the eng will need to be dropped. I'm also told that it won't effect drive shaft angle or cause other issues ?

This is my master plan (I think 😀)

take the 3.2 to a 3.8 with all the good internal stuff.

- Change the intake , TB etc to the 82mm
- Update the ECM using the Softronic software
- Change out the existing header/cat to the 987 header/cat, Into sure if they will fit yet)
- cat delete the 2nd one
- use existing muffler
- check to see where it is on the dyno.
- install Trackone suspension
- Replace Mich Super sport on all 4 corners with new Super sports or Continental DWS.

After that then maybe go with the Soul header system. (From what I understand is that header will help top end but you will sacrifice bottom end. Is this correct?)

Any words of wisdom?

Regarding the exhaust -

There are plenty of good online resources regarding diameter requirements for hp rating. If you're going to exceed 300 hp you will need to go with a dual 2.5" system, and 3" if you get close to 400, which is larger than the 987 collector (2.25"). (The segment of tube immediately following the second cat on my 2.7 was only 1.5" diameter! What the hell stuttgart?!?! That's so small that I can't even find a HP rating for it!)

There are two options here - use aftermarket catless headers and fabricate a very short 2 to 2.5" flange adapter to the collector and then run 2.5” from there (this is what I am in the process or finishing up now and will post a diy on shortly) or to have custom headers made. The second is more challenging, but you can cut the flanges off your stock header and create a shorty system in a fairly straightforward fashion. The guy who welds for me estimated it would take 4 hrs to do both sides. If you want I can elaborate on the design we were considering.

In terms of low end vs high end torque, long tube vs short tube, it's all about flow and heat. Keep the flow smooth and keep all the heat in and you will get the best results across the board. Help her breathe, that's what this is all about.

And please for the love of all that's holy, don't bring up exhaust back pressure! This forum is far too dignified to discuss such silliness ;)

Last thing and then I'll stop

Regarding the softronic

I would not go with this option. I called them to discuss tuning options for FI application and they flat out said no. I asked them for assistance with a V8 audi swap and they flat out said no. I asked them more about their tunes and process of developing the tunes and essentially they are applying a "one size fits most-ish" approach to tuning. They claim to be trained by bosch with extensive motronic programming knowledge but when I told them what I wanted in terms of fuel maps and timing retardation they said they can't do that. What??

If you want to make your girl roar, that is not the way I would go. I would start with a stock porsche tune for 3.6L from a MY with the same Canbus wiring and go from there. Install a lambda sensor and see where you're running at that point (It will theoretically run lean so you're probably maxing out on timing with little room for improvement beyond changing things like variocam engagement point, etc). I don't have any suggestions on how to find someone who can actually tune ME 7.2/7.8 beyond this in person, Lord knows I've tried. The audi guys are good with 7.8 but it's still a crapshoot. The only other venues running 7.2 are range rovers and there aren't a lot of tuners out there souping these those things out...
