key won't turn till weather warms up
Hello,
I have a 99 2.4. In the morning when it's really cold (32 degrees is cold where I live) I put the key in the ignition and it won't budge. I come back in the afternoon when it warms up and no problem. Today a 9:30 am probably 41 degrees, same thing. I got out the hair dryer and blew hot air into ignition for 5 minutes. It was still a little stiff but it did turn and started, and no problem the rest of day. Car is in excellent condition with 60k miles. The ignition switch (part # 4 A0 905 849) was replace 3 years ago this month. Any ideas? Thanks. |
Your problem sounds the same as the one I had with my blue boxster... see:
http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/75336-steering-locking-mechanism-problem-how-i-resolved.html My green boxster I believe also has this problem... very hard to turn the key when it is cold but OK when it is warm. I plan to pull the steering lock at some point to lubricate it... |
Maybe try lubing the key with oil, then stick it in and turn a few times.

Thanks for feedback!
