Rough running problem magically disappears?

Went for a dive today b/c it is nice and sunny. After about 40 minutes of all being well the CEL came on and very shortly thereafter engine started running very roughly. Like almost rattle your teeth rough. I was only a few minutes from home so made it there and shut the car down. Had a look and nothing horrendous was obvious. So I restart the engine and ...... smooth as silk, no CEL. Tried a couple more restarts and all seems well. Any ideas? Should I worry?

Did you check for codes? It could be many things. Hopefully it`s something simple, like plugs or coils, etc. Checking for codes will give you a better idea what`s wrong.

First thing that comes to mind for me is your maf, but 986 is exactly right: hook up your durametric or whatever you have and see what codes are stored.
I wouldn't panic..... whatever it is, it seems to know how to fix itself! Haha

Thanks. Seems a good excuse to buy a code reader of some kind.
