996 Retrofits
Is 996 Retrofits still in business? I’m looking to upgrade my headlights and someone said that he is no longer in business. Would love some input on this and also what else is out there.

Sorry can’t help with the actual question but in terms of other options for headlight upgrades I was going to go with these in the next couple months. They seem to have good reviews. Anyone have direct experience? https://shop.redline360.com/products/spec-d-projector-headlights-boxster-911-996-led-drl-97-01-black-or-chrome |

The last time I spoke to Ron was in July 2020. You can try emailing him at 996Retrofits@gmail.com. He should be in business.
|
I talked to him a few weeks ago and he's no longer building headlights. He took over his father's business and doesnt have the time to do them anymore. Too bad he was really talented.

Now for the second question then. Who sells the parts or kits to update the headlights?

Thank you. They are just over $300 now. They look pretty good after talking to them.
|
Another question for everyone, what other retrofit kits are out there? I really need to do something about it over the winter. My stock halogens just don't cut it anymore.

Left: factory bowl with generic xenon projector, not able to center.
Right: With centering bracket, about $30 if ordered alone, adds room for larger projector and Panamera shrouds. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1603764845.jpg |
Thank you. I spent a good part of the day trying to figure out was needed to complete this project. This makes it that much easier.

I found an old shroud that I forgot I had. If you want to go with factory bowl to start out with, this is a inexpensive ebay projector and a smaller shroud. Pretty easy to do if your just starting out. Stuck it in a old headlight to give you an idea what it looks like. Better than burnt lenses.

Wow! Thanks for the input. I'm going to the junk yard in the near future and picking up a set of 986 headlights and will be working on retrofitting those. You have definitely given me a lot to think about on this. I'll keep everyone updated.

Creativity goes a long way.
FYI: you cannot get these projectors anymore. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/2271603839497.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/2231603839581.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/2261603839629.jpg |

The PNW kind of bummed me out. Between shutdowns so strict that you couldn’t get a dentist appointment or even go to the beach, and the weeks of wildfires and smoke, I threw in the towel. :) Quote:

Thanks. The smaller projectors are LED and are mounted directly to the reflector bowl with two bolts and spacers to make them “float”. I don’t know how much you’ve seen, but I changed my headlights 5 or 6 times before settling on this one. ;)[/QUOTE] Heck of a job. I tried mounting through the bowl and they are so brittle I broke several. Thats why I had to go to the brackets. |
Thank you everyone! You all have given me some great ideas. Now to buy the parts and get to implementing it. I can't wait. Be ready for more questions!

Has anybody ever heard of or worked with “The Retrofit Source”? Here is the link to there website.

They overcharge and work is sub-par, to say the least.

I bought a Morimoto Mini Bi-Xenon kit from them to retrofit a set of Litronic lights. The RQ brackets they sent me would have mounted the projectors upside down, so they exchanged them for me free of charge for their universal brackets, which I then had to cut myself. The RQ brackets in the picture in your link look correct for Litronics but that isn't what they sent to me. The Morimoto components themselves were top notch, I can't speak about the quality or cost of any conversions they do.

Good to know. The one other question I have is about the fog lights. Is there a suggested upgrade for them? Or just switch to a better bulb.

Opened at headlight today. 13 minutes in my box oven. Getting the lens off, 4 min and 38 seconds. Not bad. 😁

What do you think of silver instead of black internals?

996 Retrofits

Awesome! Would you have tips on painting? I had headaches with my projector install this week and gave up on spending any more time painting but now that everything is fixed, maybe I’ll give it a go.. My story- Was going to work with 996retro but by the time I was ready this thread popped up so I purchased from retrofitslab. My high and lo beam never worked so after reading the forums I bought both a light switch and ignition switch to perform my install all at same time. Took me 30 min to pry the first one out but 5 min for the second with more confidence. 23 min in the oven at 220. After installing everything my hi and low beams did not work- only angel eyes. Bit more than I can chew and thought I did a horrible job wiring the lights. Gave up last Sunday and brought it into mechanic. My mistake was not fixing the original problem so they weren’t sure where to start. $1300 later, they replaced the combination switch and told me the light switch I bought (from eBay) was also broken Picking it up in 4 hours with the headlights still unsealed. I learned that I suck at being a car guy. Never worked on cars and bought this one at the start of covid to learn as my pandemic project. Mechanic also told me other things are broken so what I thought was a great deal on the car is starting to turn into a money pit. Not sure I have confidence to replace all those problems and may shell out the $1600 estimate. I do love the car though! No regrets. 2001 base - 44k miles https://imgur.com/a/8if1YUE Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
What is the best size and brand of projectors to get? There are so many out there.
