Castrol Edge 5w-50
 

My apologies for starting another oil thread......


Can anyone tell me if Castrol Edge 5w-50 is approved for our Boxsters? Since Porsche is now recommending their new classic oil I thought that I would switch from Castrol Edge 5w-40 to 5W-50.

It doesn’t meet Porsche spec. Their 0w40 and 5w40 are the only ones that do.

+1. Keep it simple Mobil1 0W40, available everywhere.

Why 0w-40 and 5w-40?

Nowhere in the manual does it it call for those grades. The manual calls for 10w-40 at 50 degrees F or above and it calls for 10w-30 or 5w-30 under colder temps.

Edge 5w-50 meets ILSAC GF 5 which is backwards compatible with Porsche's ILSAC GF1 spec's- isn't that correct?

By whom? Porsche? Is there an addendum to the manual somewhere? Hopefully I'm not coming across the wrong way, I'm genuinely doubting the oil I'm using now. :confused:

Tests indicate that 0W oils do not hold up, and there's significant breakdown of viscosity and protection.

Search for replies from JFP in PA...he's got a lot of excellent data and oil analysis to back this up.

Mobil 1 oil quality is not what it used to be either.

Castrol Edge 10W40 is a great oil, and results from oil tests done provides excellent protection.

Edge 5W50 is also fine.

I cannot argue with what you have written. For these cars, if you are not trying some crazy long oil change interval, then any reasonable oil will be fine.

That said, per BITOG, the base stock of the 0w-40 Castrol is PAO. The 5w40 is not. Does it make a difference? If they are both the same price then 0w-40 Castrol Euro is the right choice.

I was curious and just saw that Porsche has branded some oils... and guess what they recommend for the 986?

I am sure someone can find out who makes their oil (made in Germany).

For me, my first oil change was with Castrol Edge Euro 0w-40. That is going to stay in there for 3000 miles and through this coming winter. After that, I might look into a 5w-50 for the summer. Worst case, I will stick with the Edge Euro 0w-40 and 3000 mile intervals.

Someone on Rennlist posted a 2016 Porsche approved A40 oil list. It was all either 0w40 or 5w40 oils.

Folks are more than welcome to follow 19 year old guidance based on oils available 19 years ago. We have better oil today!
0w or 5w will flow better at startup.

I cannot imagine running a 10wXX oil ever again. If you are worried about 0w shearing down, then run a 5w. I still have bottles of Castrol 0w30 aka "GC" that was all the rage with oil nerds in the past.

Even my vtwin mower gets 5w40 (Delo XSP).
