Boxster S shifter problem

My 2000 Boxster S has 74k miles. Pulled into garage last week everything was fine. The next morning it wouldn’t shift past 2nd gear. It will go into reverse, 1st and 2nd but doesn’t move to neutral like it normally has. Any ideas??????

Check the transmission end of the shifter cables. The cable itself may have slipped out of the mount on the tranny or the ends of the cables may have detached from the pivot linkage going into the transmission. This is a common issue and if you search you will find all kinds of threads on the subject. There are a number of solutions from zip ties to after market clips to address the particular problem.

Tell us what you find, hopefully it’s the cable. My 2001 shifts kinda notchy, always has. I got used to it but I lubed everything up during a recent clutch job. it is greatly improved, but I still watch my friends struggle when they take it for a spin. Only one guy figured it out and now he is shopping for a 986S as we speak.
