Whining sound when starting P-Car

My 99 boxster just started a whining sound everytime I start my car and then as soon as it starts it stops ?
I think I read somewhere that is a sign that the starter is going bad.
Anybody care to comment on what they think it might be.

Can you post a recording of the sound? The secondary air injection can make what sounds like a whine that lasts a short time after starting.

Sorry but I won't be able to make a recording....And the sound doesn't go on after starting it starts just before it starts as in as soon as the starter turns over and stops exactly after it starts.

So what would I be looking at to check out this secondary air injection thing.

You need to be much more precise. Does the whining start when you turn the key to the start position, or before? Does it stop when you release the key to the run position. If the answers are yes and yes, then it's the starter. Only if it continues after you release the key is there a possibility that it is the secondary air injection.

Check your power steering level. Same happened to me and when I topped it off the whining went away. I was driving like that for a while until my mechanic pointed it out. Another forum member had a similar post and topping off the power steering fixed it.

Well the "Burners Car's" video is the exact sound my car is making....Thanks for that Starter986.

And I just did a whole lot of work on the P-car and checked and topped off the power steering fluid so I know it's not that.

And for Anker it is yes & yes so the starter it is....looks like I've got some more work to do.

Thank you everybody for helping solve this problem.
