Rear Number Plate recess
Has anyone found anything you can buy to dress up the rear number plate recess (Australian Boxster with no bumperettes), I bought a polycarbonate number plate cover but the heat from the exhaust deformed it, and I can't find any metal frames/covers to suit. The rear bumper number plate recess is the only part of the car that I think looks crap, but can't find anyone selling anything out there to dress it up and make it look better

So what did you actually do? What is the black section, is it a plate of some description or just painted, the photo doesn’t really show much, but it definitely looks better with the blackout.

Yeah? Likely I'd be in. ;) |
Thanks for the vote of confidence! I have some spare that I would be willing to part with for a small fee. What I did was I bought a piece of ABS made a cardboard template then took it to a glass cutter to cut it out. I then used nuts & bolts to affix the license plate and sandwich the ABS to the bumper. Let me see if I still have the extras and we can talk price. Don't want to be greedy just cover my costs. I did find a place at some point that sells an aluminum anodized piece but was $200 I think? Will sell what I have for $35 including shipping.

Your rear bumper cover you removed, yes? Looks clean. |
PM me your email and I will send pics. When I did this I replaced the bumper with an 03-04 unit. My car is a 99. Also replaced muffler. The ABS is flat, textured on one side smooth on the other. I put the textured side facing out. I also did some minor shaping over a flame on stove to bend the edges slightly to conform to the curvature of the bumper. Pieces were cut by a professional glass cutter. I tried a jigsaw and gave up.

I got insired by your Black panel in the rear number plate recess and decided to have a go at making my own version, this is what I ended up doing. First effort and will make another one but using aluminium c channel as a surround for the grill.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1589604753.jpg

Photo was a bit dark so lightened it a bit. The number late cover and frame are custom made from some old picture framing aluminium section and some lexan I had laying around.
