Help, my cluster has worms
 

Does anybody know what would have caused these worm like faults in my cluster? I just had this appear when bring the Box out of its winter hibernation, never seen it before.

The faults are much brighter than the rest of the digits on the cluster. Does anyone know what has caused this and if and how it can be fixed?

The LCD has failed. Repair or replace.

It's kinda cool though.

Obviously the LCD is bad. I think the OP wanted to know what caused it and if it can be fixed. My guess fixing is not an option. It would have to be replaced. But I'm with Frodo, it's kinda cool!

Not an answer to the OPs question, but when I saw your reply, I wondered, "Why would the OP reply to himself?" And then I realized you two are different users. :D

I should add - Try "German Audio Tech" out in Long Beach, CA. I've had success with him on my old BMWs (twice) and his repairs have been great for over 5+ years (I still speak to the current owners of my previous BMWs.) He should be able to tell you why it happens or what causes this.

If you want to try replacing the lcd yourself, I think Particlewave posted a link Search on Particlewave and lcd and it may pop up.

I attempted to repair my BMW display and made it worse, so I gave up and sent it to G.A.T and it came back as good as new!

This happened to my climate control screen during winter storage 2 years ago. Must have gotten too cold, i suspect the day it was -15 out. Regardless, it was unsightly and super annoying to look at. I read lightly tapping could help (same thing if you have dead pixels in a computer monitor) but that didn’t do anything. Fast forward 6 months and its gone. Just out of the blue. The whole thing. What this novel was meant to say is it may correct itself eventually. Not worth money to fix if it does.

I have a theory that it's caused by the cold. Not like it gets real cold down here in this part of Texas but I've seen it happen three time in the dead of winter. Maybe it's just a coincidence

For the last 5 winters my Boxster has been stored in an unheated building which can get well below -30 F throughout the winter. No issue with my gauge cluster.

The post i mentioned it, never had an issue the first winter nor this past winter. Like playing the lotto lol

I store my car in an unheated garage during the winter. It gets pretty cold up here in NY. A few years ago my cluster had the worms after winter storage. I didn't fix it and by the middle of the summer the worms were gone. It has been a few years and they haven't come back. This is on the older style cluster, my car is a 98.
