Recommended Ignition Switch

Any strong favorites for a replacement ignition switch for '99 986? Didn't know if there was much of a difference between any of those that you can find for $10-$20.

Thanks!

Buy the OEM. Period. We don't need another thread about how a URO or other aftermarket part failed.

Buy cheap. Buy twice.

Best wishes.

For something like the ignition switch, I think the community would recommend only an original Porsche part to buy. I would not risk buying an aftermarket piece.

The manufacturing tolerances and specifications will likely NOT be up to Porsche specifications. I am only aware of a 996 owner who purchased an aftermarket ignition switch, which failed in 2 months, and his key was stuck, resulting in a new key, and a huge repair bill. He immediately purchased an original Porsche switch and had no issues.

OEM, my original ignition switch lasted 13 years. I was in a pinch and bought one at a NAPA store. It was made in China and of very brittle plastic. It lasted only 6 months.

Exactly the feedback I was looking for. OEM it is. Now the issue is that Pelican Parts is currently out of stock on the ignition switch. I should be ok as long as I can find part # 4A0 905 849 B somewhere else right? May call PP to see how long they expect to be out of stock.

Thanks for input above too.

That is not an Porsche part number, the correct one is 996-347-017-07, which is the entire mechanical assembly (they no longer sell just the electrical section). But you can still buy the electrical section, which is VW/Audi from Amazon.

NDKev - If you are interested in JUST the electrical section, I have a spare VW/Audi one that's never been opened. I bought a spare just in case, but turned out my problem was my battery itself. you might get a better deal from your local VW/Audi dealer or via Amazon as JFP in PA recommended.

Installed a new switch since the dash is out. Ordered the OEM from FCP Euro, made in Germany. :)

Good luck, sir. Should be fine. FCP Euro has an awesome and amazing returns policy should this fail (and for your sake, I hope not!)
