Reflash for Power increase

Hi everyone. I originally posted this in the Tech thread, but this thread gets way more viewers and interaction, so I figured to put this up here. Mods, please feel free to merge this if need be.

I am about to jump into doing the 987 Airbox swap and I will be pairing it with a 987 MAF Sensor, 997 Throttle Body, and the 997 T-Plenum. I will also be doing the secondary CAT Delete during this time.

My concern is, using the 987 MAF tube flows more air through and the stock 986 Tune will lean out the car. Everyone says a 996 tune is needed to fix this and bring the parameters in order and yield more HP.

I was able to find a local PCA recommended Shop who is willing to reflash the car, as he wants to learn more about this mod and expand his clientele to older water cooled cars, he is just telling me I need to get a 996 VIN and he can get the codes from Porsche to reflash. My dilemmas are:

1. 2002 saw 996 go to 3.6 L and VarioCam Plus,
2. DME was upgraded to a new version in 2002 in both the 996 & the 986
3. Can I get a 2001 VIN and flash that tune and not run into issues? Or do I get a 2002 VIN
4. Where would you recommend I find a 996 VIN?

Thanks for your time. I look forward to learning more.

Trys cars.com or autotrader and find a 996 for sale. They often have the VIN in the ad

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. But what about from what year? I’m worried because of the engine differences

You never actually say what year or model (base or S) your car is.

To start, read this. It will help you to understand which DME versions go with which 986 or 996 model years.

Holy Moly, you are right. I have a 2002 Boxster S. 2002 986’s had a DME update.
