Boxster top / hood glue failed
 

Hi, checking over my Boxster I noticed there was a sort of dip in the rear top / hood underneath the the rear windscreen, the inch or so that's there is dipped so it would hold water. On further inspection I found the adhesive that sticks the hood to the frame had failed and all along the bottom it was unstuck, hence the lack of tautness in the fabric. Can this just be re-glued?

I've been thinking about having the roof replaced anyway, but it's an expense I could do without and the old one could come up nicely with a bit of work, any recommendations for something to get rid of green algae, or any for a new top / hood supplier in the UK?

I re-glued mine a year or so ago. Easy job. So far so good!

It seems to be 3M 06384 tape which is the adhesive recommendation, but it doesn’t seem to be available here in the UK, any equivalent someone can recommend?

i used regular old contact cement and it worked well. Make sure you have a way of pulling the surface good and taught before you stick it.

Thanks but I think they're still despatched from USA and I have no idea how long that will take. I've been in contact with a UK 3M supplier and they've been very helpful suggesting I use 3M 9088. It's more like the original rather than the acrylic stuff. I have a 2003 top on my 2001 S and the same problem is occurring on my top. Sagging at back, which causes wind flapping at speed due to the top not being secured at back of car.

I tried the 3M tape as suggested and it did not hold the canvas. I am thinking of using Aquaseal instead and will report back in a few weeks.

I think I will remove the top and work on it in the garage on a stand or on a blanket. Not sure as I might need top to be tight.

I'm hearing that from others too, including a chap who fits them for Porsche dealerships. I'm going to try the tape as I've bought it and I'll see what happens, if it fails I'll look at the contact adhesive option

On my old Miata, I had a similar problem, and using Gorilla Glue worked. The Miata top is vinyl, not canvas, but the inside of our canvas tops are rubber, so I would think the Gorilla Glue would work.

The 3m tape works perfectly if this is done correctly. I just did this about 6 months ago. Don't use glue. If you screw up there's no going back. If you make a mistake with the tape, like I did, just clean it all off and start over. Its not that hard. There's a reason the factory used tape.
